Today, the Church keeps the Dormition of the Mother of God.
We remember Mary, the Theotokos, not simply because she gave birth to Christ, but because her whole life became an answer to God. She received the Word. She carried Christ into the world. She remained near him through suffering. And she trusted God even when the road before her was unclear.
In the Dormition, we remember her falling asleep in the Lord and her reception into the fullness of God’s presence. Our Convergent Catholic tradition holds this feast alongside the Western language of the Assumption, drawing from both East and West while keeping our attention where Mary always directs it, toward Christ.
Her Magnificat becomes the song of the Church again today:
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
Mary’s song is not quiet resignation. It is the song of a woman who trusted God enough to believe the proud would be scattered, the mighty brought down, the lowly lifted up, and the hungry filled with good things.
The Dormition reminds us where such faith leads. Death does not have the final word. The God who raised Jesus Christ from the dead gathers God’s people into life.
So today we honor the Mother of God. We ask her prayers. And we follow her example of faith, courage, humility, and love.
Most holy Theotokos, pray for us.
God of glory, you took the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son, into the fullness of your presence. Grant that we, who rejoice in her witness, may follow her in faith and humility until we share the joy of your reign. Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
