"Sometimes people come to me and ask, 'Please, could you pray for me to find my soulmate?' So I ask them, 'What do you mean?' They have a long list: He/she should understand me, be there for me, support me, and especially, be a meditator. Normally, I advise them, 'There is no such thing as Mr. or Ms. Perfect.' Many of them are not so happy to hear this."

Mingyur Rinpoche shares his wisdom on why expectations can lead to obstacles when developing relationships.

"Mingyur Rinpoche often mentions that when we start meditating, it might seem that we are experiencing more emotions... For as long as I can remember, I’ve always lived with a very keen awareness of my emotions. In fact, I didn’t feel that my emotions increased when I started meditating, as Rinpoche described. My experience was quite different.... I was constantly faced with incessant emotions. Early on, not knowing what to do with my experience... led to even more dissatisfaction. Hence, following each session, I felt almost constant failure."

Tergar teacher Frédéric Auquier shares how Rinpoche's teachings helped him work with incessant emotions during meditation.

What I have learned and what Rinpoche emphasizes is that the quality of experience – up or down – is absolutely irrelevant.

Technology has often led to further isolation and loneliness in our fast-paced lives. Our screens are flooded with notifications, an endless waterfall of information, and little to no genuine human interaction. Balancing the convenience of receiving information online with opportunities to connect with others worldwide is indeed a challenge.

On March 30, Mingyur Rinpoche will lead a half-day online retreat titled Three Life Skills. During this retreat, he will guide participants through connecting with awareness, compassion, and wisdom.

"So I would like to discuss about meditation. But first of all, I'd like to ask you a very simple question. Can you see my hand? Yes, raise your hand. OK, can you hear me? Yes? Great. That is the meditation. So, finished. My TED Talk is finished.

"Of course, I'm just kidding. But in a way that is true. Why? What we call the essence of meditation is awareness. And what is awareness? Knows what you are thinking, feeling, doing, seeing, hearing. That's all. So actually meditation is very easy, but many people find it difficult. Why? There are two misunderstandings about meditation."

- Mingyur Rinpoche discusses meditation, laziness, panic attacks, and trying not to think about pizza at an April 2022 TED talk.

Meditation asks you to slip into a state of serene presence. But why does something that sounds effortless often feel so difficult? In this lighthearted invitation, spiritual leader Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche shares three steps to help you accept the ebb and flow of your emotions and learn to meditate....

"So, how to energize our body? If we energize our body, then it will also help our mind. The mind becomes balanced and will get energy. Not only that, the mind will become more calm and peaceful. Of course, we can work with the mind through meditation, but today I am going to teach a breathing exercise, how to work with the breath."

- Mingyur Rinpoche teaches a simple breathing exercise called the “thirty-breath exercise."

In this monthly teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche discusses energizing the body and calming the mind through a simple breathing exercise called the “thirty-breath exercise.” This straightforward practice aims to balance the mind and develop an appreciation for our lives and the world around us.

When we have committed to the path of meditation, we tend to impose this desire for consistency on that, too, so should we experience any sort of dip in our meditation practice, we feel uncomfortable, dissatisfied, insecure — all those bugaboos start vying for our attention. But this habit of seeking consistency really has no place in a meditation practice. Try to free yourself from any expectation that anything about your practice is going to remain perfectly steady, or that you’ll be able to replicate any experiences you might have. Just be.

"In a world where “proactive” is a compliment, being goal-oriented is seen as a virtue. So it’s normal for a meditator to fall into the habit of setting practice goals: meditating every day for the rest of your life, for instance, or attaining a non-conceptual state of mind that’s peaceful, blissful, and clear.... However, this habit hinges on a fundamental misunderstanding. In meditation, the point is not to look toward an imagined future; it is to be right here, right now, with a mind that’s in the present moment."
