In this Sunday’s Gospel from Matthew, Jesus gives us the remedy for working out our differences. His example of sitting with and ministering to the Gentiles and tax collectors of His day shows us that we are called to love every single person. We don’t have to like what they do, but we do have to love them and share God’s mercy. This is challenging, but with God’s grace, it’s not impossible.

Every month the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network shares a video expressing Pope Leo XIV’s prayer intention for the month. For September 2026, the Holy Father’s intention is: For the care of water. Let us pray for a just and sustainable management of water, a vital resource, so that everyone may have equal access to it.

Water is a sacred gift that sustains life. We see a sign of God’s generosity in water. It quenches our thirst and makes the earth fertile. In Baptism, it becomes a symbol of his renewing grace. Taking care of water is also a form of safeguarding life and of recognizing that this resource belongs to everyone, without distinction.

In his prayer intention for September, Pope Leo invites us to pray that water be protected so that we might learn to appreciate it with gratitude, justice, and moderation, and so that we might know how to defend the right of every brother and sister to have equal access to drinkable water.

What if the cross you’ve been asking God to remove is actually an invitation to draw closer to Him?

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that following Him isn’t about avoiding every hardship or choosing the easiest path. It’s about taking up our cross and following Him—even when the road is difficult.
