The Pursuit of Truth:
Lies often get mixed with truth to make the lies more palatable. Discernment is the key to distinguishing the two. The following describes four types of people when it comes to discerning truth from falsehood:
1. The Confused (accept both truth and lies)
These individuals don’t realize they lack discernment. As a result, they tend to accept both truth and lies without much thought, mixing them together. This often results in an inconsistent belief system and internal instability.
2. The Skeptics (reject both truth and lies)
These people know they struggle with discernment, so they become very cautious. Because they’re aware of their blind spots, they often reject both truth and lies out of an abundance of caution. This "not knowing what to believe" can result in feelings of ambivalence, confusion, sadness, etc.
3. The Deceived (accept lies and reject truth)
These individuals believe they have strong discernment, but they’re actually blinded by self-deception. They end up accepting lies while rejecting the truth. Confirmation bias is often present.
4. The Discerning (accept truth and reject lies)
These are the people who truly have developed discernment. They can separate truth from lies, keeping what’s good (“the baby”) and letting go of what’s not (“the bathwater”).
How do you think proper discernment can be developed?
