A joyful heart is good medicine. Proverbs 17:22

A dear friend was recently diagnosed with what he was told was terminal form of cancer. This friend also has one of the most optimistic and joyful spirits I have ever encountered. He says he trusts God come what may. As Paul said, “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21.

If God extends his life, great, more time to spend loving Him and friends and family. If God calls him home, also great, time to be with the Lord. His attitude is so good that his doctors are amazed by his steady relative health despite the disease in his body. I am not suggesting that a joyful heart can heal a terminal disease, but my friend has shown me that a joyful heart can make whatever time we have better.

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. – Psalm 30:5

Christians are not exempt from hardship or pain. We weep but as the bible says, “not as others who have no hope.” (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Beneath our sorrows and pain is a river of hope and the promise that a new day will dawn and with it – joy.

Romans 8:37-39: In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Your abiding joy is in the fact that nothing will ever separate you from God’s eternal love.

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. – Psalm 94:19

According to Merriam Webster happiness is a state of well-being or contentment, a pleasurable or satisfying experience. Happiness is often connected to a moment or to an external circumstance. When you make a purchase, a salesperson might ask you if you are happy with the purchase, you might say yes or no depending on your expectations of what that purchase was going to mean for you. Joy on the other hand is a more permanent enduring attitude of the heart.

In an article on Compassion.com entitled “What the Bible Says About Joy,” the author said, “We pursue happiness, but choose joy.” You choose joy instead of anxiety every time you place faith over fear, every time you trust instead of doubt, and every time you invite Jesus in rather than lock him out.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23

The Holy Spirit lives in each of us. The mission of the Holy Spirit is to produce the character of Christ in every believer. The fruit of the spirit is the character of Christ.

Love is mentioned first because God is love but joy is second on the list. The joy spoken of here is not the joy we feel on Christmas morning, or when our favorite team wins the World Series. The fruit of joy is a personality trait born of the presence of God within us, it does not fade as circumstances change but instead it endures, and it endures because Christ lives in us and where Christ is present there is joy.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! – Philippians 4:4

Joy is a choice. Joy is a choice we can make for ourselves regardless of our life circumstance. Joy is finding the perspective on our circumstances that creates gratitude rather than despair. The source of joy is that same source from which we receive love. Our circumstances can change from day to day but God’s love for us is constant and that love, and that assurance is the foundation of joy.

Many things about tomorrow
I don't seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
– Colossians 3:17

God does mean for us to worship on the Sabbath, but worship isn’t for God. God doesn’t need to be worshipped. But God knows that we need to worship. We need to praise. At least once a week we need to affirm what is critical in our lives . . . God. The Sabbath teaches that we should prioritize our relationship with God above all else, but also stresses the importance of taking care of our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Life is a continual balancing act. Trust God because He wants only the best for you. We are blessed when we give our best to him. Thanks be to God!

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2:8-9

For years, Christians from differing backgrounds have debated which is more important to God: our faith or our works? But the Bible doesn’t favor one over the other. The truth is that once God has justified us based on our faith in Christ good works will follow because we know how much we are forgiven and loved by God. That forgiveness and love experienced overflows to others. So, are we saved by our faith or our works? The answer is, we are saved by God. Our faith and our works are a loving response to what God has done in Christ. An African proverb put it like this: "God made the sea, we make the ship; He made the wind, we make a sail; He made the calm, we make oars." That's balance.

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. - 3 John 1:2

Robert Spain tells of being in Okinawa and seeing people put huge loads on both ends of a pole, put the pole across their shoulders, and walk for miles. He saw the same thing in China and on a farm in Barbados. The secret is that the load is balanced. Taking that one step further – they couldn’t balance the load if their bodies were not created as they are with two shoulders, two legs, two arms, two eyes, etc. When God created Adam and Eve God said, “it is good.”

Our lives and our bodies were designed for balance. This is a concept that many people are just now discovering--balance. Workshops are being given in major corporations on how to balance one's life--work and family, income and spiritual well-being. How about you? Are you living a well-balanced life? Are you seeking first God’s kingdom and his righteousness?

And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. – Mark 6:31

Hurried lives. Packed schedules. Limited sleep. Did God intend for us to live at such a frenzied pace? The Gospels would tell us otherwise. Jesus set an example for us and in doing so calls us to take time to leave our harried lives, find a quiet spot and rest. We need to set aside time to shut the world out “to rest a while” and focus our attention on God's presence in our lives for the refreshment of our spirits. Our lives were designed for balance. It’s time we paid attention to what modern life is doing to us.

And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. Genesis 2:2-3

The Sabbath is mentioned about one hundred and forty-five times in the whole Bible and God instructs us to keep the Sabbath holy designating that it is special and different from the other days. God rested on the Sabbath, not because He was tired but because he was setting an example for humans. Showing us that balance is important in every part of our lives. We are all trying to find it, aren't we? Balance between work and leisure. Balance between job and family. Balance between time devoted to church and time for ourselves. The Sabbath is a time to engage with the almighty God personally and relationally, to feel God’s blessings, to radiate God’s joy with our hearts, souls, and voices. Then and only then can we truly live a balanced life.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” – Isaiah 43:19

Sometimes life can feel static – the days blur together, we wonder if things will ever change. God’s promise to make a new thing is one which reminds us that God is always at work in our lives, creating a new thing within us and through us! God provides us with renewal, hope, encouragement, transformation. What new thing is God working in you?
