When they therefore were come together, they asked of Jesus, saying, "Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel"?
And He said unto them, "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth".
And when Jesus had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
The Ascension of Christ is no less a Christian feast Day than Christmas or Easter. The Psalm 110 proclaim:
The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. The Lord is at your right hand; He will shatter kings on the day of His wrath.
He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.
God and man rule heaven and earth together in the person of Jesus Christ. The ascension proclaims Jesus as Lord of all, and King of Kings. Jesus is not sitting quietly in heaven, but rules actively and is omnipresent and locally present in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Most Christ churches will celebrate this feast day on Sunday because we are simply not interested in spending extra time with the Lord.
