This free program can save a life. Please use it.

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the recent tragedy involving a young child in the Capital Region. During difficult times like these, we are reminded how quickly a loved one can wander from safety and how every second matters.

We want to remind our community about Project Lifesaver, a free public safety program offered by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office for individuals who are prone to wandering due to autism, Down syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other conditions that affect memory, judgment, or awareness.

Participants wear a small transmitter that emits a unique radio signal. Unlike a GPS device, it does not record or monitor a person's location. Instead, it emits a radio signal that can be detected by trained emergency responders, even through buildings, wooded areas, and other challenging environments.

When someone goes missing, time is critical. Call 911 immediately and let the dispatcher know your loved one is enrolled in Project Lifesaver.

Although no technology or program is foolproof, Project Lifesaver can help reduce search times and provide an additional layer of protection for those at risk of wandering.
