The Rock Philly

The Rock Philly Welcome to the official page of The Rock Ministries of Philadelpia/The Rock Calvary Chapel of Kensington. Above all, it is a place that needs Jesus.

A Bible, boxing gloves and five boys … that’s how Rock Ministries started. With its goal to reach at-risk, inner city youth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Rock has now grown to serve over 5000 kids through sports, arts, music, recreation, mentoring and Bible studies. Through our church, The Rock – Calvary Chapel of Kensington, we also serve the community with regular outreaches, support for

addicts and others in need, a food pantry and most importantly, the consistent teaching of the Word of God. Our neighborhood of Kensington is known far and wide as a center of the drug trade, with all the crime and violence that it brings. It is among the poorest neighborhoods in America where homelessness and hunger are everyday realities. The Rock has been privileged to witness God work at work in this very dark place. He is transforming lives and bringing hope to this otherwise hopeless inner-city ‘hood! He truly is The Rock!

It is with great anticipation that the entire Rock family looks forward to the completion of the future Rock Youth Factory, a place that will offer so many new opportunities for the youth of Kensington.

We are excited and extremely humbled to be in a position to help provide the next generation of kids with a safe refuge, a place where they can grow, learn, train, and discover the purpose God has for their lives.

Lord willing, we are hoping for completion sometime in late October into November.

This building has an incredible history in the boxing community. From 1917 to 1963, the legendary Cambria also known as “The Blood Pit” hosted boxing every Friday night. Many great fighters and world champions stepped through these doors and got their start within these four walls.

Now, more than a century after the building first became part of Philadelphia’s boxing history, it is being given a new purpose.

A building that once trained champions in the ring will now be used to train Champions for Christ!

Please continue to pray that the Lord provides everything we need to complete this project and accomplish the vision He has given us for the children and families of Kensington.

“Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” Psalm 127:1

What a blessing it was to gather for Family Night! ❤️

We enjoyed a great evening of fellowship, games, food, and encouragement from God’s Word. Our kids had their own breakout time where they were intentionally discipled, while we spent time encouraging and praying over our families as we begin a new school year.

We’re thankful for the church family God has given us and pray that our homes would be places where Jesus is known, loved, and followed.

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:15

Some of our Rock kids enjoying a beautiful day in the heart of Kensington at The Rock Garden, learning valuable lessons about harvesting vegetables, caring for the plants, and watching the fruit of their hard work grow.

We’re so grateful for The Rock Garden and for all the life lessons our kids are learning there…lessons about patience, responsibility, hard work, and caring for what God has given us.

Please continue to pray for the children of Kensington, that the Lord would watch over and protect them as they navigate through our community and are exposed to so many difficult and devastating sights.

“The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.” Psalm 121:8 # Kensingtonphilly

This week we celebrate Luca D’Amico as he graduates from our internship program at The Rock!

Luca came all the way from Italy with a desire to grow in his faith, train in our boxing program, and serve the people of Kensington. Our prayer is that the things he learned during his time here—both inside and outside the ring—will go with him as he returns home and that the Lord will use him to impact others for Christ.

Luca, we’re grateful for the time you spent serving alongside us and excited to see how God continues to use your life in Italy.

“Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report… meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”
— Philippians 4:8–9

Last week, our youth had an incredible time at our Summer Retreat! From swimming and basketball to animals, games, and group activities, there was no shortage of fun and memories being made.

The theme of this year’s retreat came from Matthew 7:13–14—the call to enter through the narrow gate and walk the path that leads to life. More important than everything our kids got to do was the time they spent in God’s Word, worshipping together, and learning what it means to choose the narrow way and follow Jesus.

Our prayer is that what was planted in their hearts at camp would continue to grow and that they would choose to follow Jesus even when the road isn’t easy.

“Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” — Matthew 7:14
