Understanding the meaning and history behind Juneteenth today, presently and tomorrow:

The History Behind Juneteenth

The Delayed News: President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. However, in Texas—which had few Union troops—enslaved people remained in bo***ge for another two and a half years.

General Order No. 3: On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, which finally freed the remaining 250,000 enslaved people in the state.

As a Federal Holiday: It took decades of grassroots celebrations in Black communities for Juneteenth to finally be signed into a U.S. federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

On June 17, 2015, a gunman walked into Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and opened fire, tragically killing nine church worshippers at bible study.
