Intersectional, interfaith, & LQBTQIA affirming space. A satellite building of Arch Street United Methodist Church. Serenity House, of 1209 Lehigh Avenue, once served as the parsonage of Cookman United Methodist Church, as well as a home for homeless youth and ex-offenders transitioning back into the neighborhood. Though Cookman UMC has closed its doors, the ongoing presence of Serenity House on t
he corner of 12th and Lehigh offers hope for the gathering of a new community. Currently, the House supports Spirituality and Holistic Healing Ministries such as women’s and men’s support groups, Bible studies, book and film discussions, exercise and stress management sessions, and the development of a Serenity Garden. While the first floor offers a peaceful and welcoming home for these programs, other sections of the house need renovation and care. Arch Street UMC has embraced financial responsibility for Serenity House since the fall of 2012, in order to support the House’s role as a source of healing and renewal for our neighbors.
