Waves whisper, Awake!
The new moon of Elul is upon us
We dip our feet in these living waters
Wash away what no longer serves
We dwell in the temple of time.

Fires and destruction of Av retreat
Crumbling walls, wild conflagration
Now the moment to dive deep within
Search blood and marrow
We can’t look away.

What do we carry in our flesh and bones?
Regrets lodged in our liver
Arrows of anger tied to our tongue
Shame hiding in our hair
Grief gurgling in our gut.

The piercing blast of the shofar
Rouses our trembling hearts
Vibrates, inundates our every cell
Opens the floodgates for release
Urges us to forgive.

We lift our face to the rising sun
Feel the breeze on our quaking limbs
Inhale the scent of lavender and sweet grass
Touch the solid core of our being,
Return home.
