📖 Blast from the Past

GO FORWARD
June 21, 1941

🎓 Graduation is not the finish line—it’s the starting point.

In 1941, The Way encouraged graduates to move forward with confidence, determination, and faith.

The advice may have been written more than 80 years ago, but its message remains timeless.

Take two minutes to read this week’s Blast from the Past and be inspired to keep moving forward.

Today, our Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

This feast is connected with the return and solemn exaltation of the Cross of Christ in Jerusalem. Yet it is more than a remembrance of events from the past. The Cross stands before us as a source of life and joy and invites us to reflect: How do we exalt the Cross in our own lives — in our words, our choices, and the way we treat others?

“Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips!” (Ps. 141:3)
May the Cross of Christ guide our hearts and our lives!

September 11 marks 50 years since the passing of Metropolitan Ambrose Senyshyn to eternity. He was the first Eastern Catholic bishop ordained in North America and the second Ukrainian Metropolitan of Philadelphia. In this article, we would like to tell you about his life and activities, which were dedicated to our Church in the United States.

Bishop Ambrose was born on February 23, 1903, in Stary Sambir to Tymotej and Maria, née Petrus’ka. He first received his education in a public school in his town, then at a gymnasium in Lviv. At age 20, young Andriy Senyshyn entered the order of St. Basil the Great and began his novitiate in Krekhiv. Then he took the monastic name Ambrose. In 1925, after his novitiate, he continued his studies in Lavriv, Dobromyl, and Krystynopil, receiving a philosophical and theological education. On August 23, 1931, Bishop Josaphat Kotsylovsky ordained 28-year-old Ambrose as a priest in Krechiv. After that, the young priest went to Warsaw, where he served as a parochial vicar at the Basilian parish and continued his studies.

Twenty-five years later, the memories remain.

Members of our community share their personal memories of September 11, 2001 — moments of shock and uncertainty, concern for loved ones, fear and helplessness, but also unity, solidarity, and faith.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives, those who gave their lives trying to save others, the survivors and their families, and all who continue to carry the memory of that day.

Episode 2 – 1691 Przemyśl Eparchy

Nearly a century after the Union of Brest, the Przemyśl Eparchy reached a decisive turning point in its relationship with Rome.

When the Union of Brest was proclaimed in 1596, Bishop Mykhail Kopystensky of Przemyśl opposed it. For decades afterward, Orthodox and Uniate hierarchies competed for authority over the eparchy.

The situation changed under Bishop Inokentii Vynnytsky, who secretly accepted the Union in 1681. By 1691, developments within the eparchy opened the way for Przemyśl to enter fully into communion with Rome.

The story of Przemyśl reminds us that the Union of Brest was not a single moment, but a process that unfolded across generations.

Watch Episode 2 of A Church of Witness to learn more about this important chapter in the history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
