KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Founded on March 29, 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus serves as a fraternal benefit society founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity.

The Knights render financial aid to members and their families and mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families.

Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. Practicing Catholic men 18 years of age and older may join the Knights. Fr. Ryan Council #5036, located at 9090 Old Bustleton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19115 serves 3 parishes in Philadelphia: Maternity B.V.M., Resurrection of Our Lord and St. Cecilia.

Fr. Ryan Council History

On November 13,1960 the Father J.F. Ryan Coucil 5036 was instituted in the parish of the Resurrection of Our Lord Church in the City of Philadelphia in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

A small cadre of knights transferred from other councils to join the newly-formed council but most of the charter members were new initiates into the Order. At the time, Luke Hart was the Supreme Knight. Pennsylvania State Deputy was Warren F. O-'Donnell and the District Deputy of the 7th district was Frank P. White, Sr., Past Grand Knight of Assumpta Council 3S85.

Rev. Joseph L. Curran, Pastor of Resurrection Church and a long time member of the Knights of Columbus encouraged the formation of the council in his parish. The Philadelphia Archdiocese was without an Archbishop on November 13, 1960. His Eminence John Cardinal 0'Hara,C.S.C. died on August 28, 1960 and His Eminence John Cardinal Krol,D.D.,J.C.D. was promoted to Archbishop of Philadelphia on February 11,1961 and installed on March 23, 1961. His Holiness Pope John XXIII reigned as Vicar of Christ, and the President-Elect of the United States was Brother Knight John F. Kennedy. David L. Lawrence was Governor of Pennsylvania and Richardson Dilworth was Mayor of Philadelphia.

Edward Urban was appointed Grand Knight and meetings were held in Resurrection School Hall on the first and third Sundays of the month. The early meetings were exciting and well attended, laying the groundwork for a successful council.

The present Council Home at 9090 Old Bustleton Ave. was purchased in 1966 and the first meeting held in the hall was in January, 1967.

In 1962 the newsletter ''The Banner'' was started by the Fr. Ryan Squire Circle. In 1964 the Council assumed editorship and publication of the new bulletin.
