31 maggio ~ Visitazione della Vergine ~ Titolare della Provincia Romana

Come ogni anno, alla fine del mese di maggio celebriamo la titolare della nostra Provincia
Romana: la Vergine Maria che visita Elisabetta per stare con lei ed offrire il suo aiuto e se stessa in una delicata attenzione che commuove anche per il lungo viaggio che ha dovuto affrontare. Ma oltre la parentela, l’amicizia, l’aiuto, al centro di questo evento c’è la presenza della salvezza che viene, del Salvatore incarnato riconosciuto dal non-nato Giovanni e indicato con stupore e riconoscenza da Elisabetta.

PREGHIERA IN PREPARAZIONE AL CAPITOLO

G. Il Signore inviò Pietro Nolasco, suo servo, per liberare coloro che giacevano nelle tenebre e nell’ombra di morte.
T. Imitiamo la sua ardente carità.

G. Ascoltò gli afflitti, schiavi della miseria e delle catene.
T. Imitiamo la sua ardente carità.

G. Il Signore ci ha visitato per mezzo di Pietro Nolasco, nostro Padre.
T. Perché, liberi dal potere del nemico, lo serviamo in santità e giustizia.

G. Preghiamo: O Signore, che hai rivestito della carità di Cristo il nostro Padre san Pietro Nolasco, e per mezzo della Vergine Maria lo hai fatto messaggero di amore e di libertà per i cristiani schiavi, concedici di imitare il suo esempio, per la liberazione di tutti gli oppressi e l’edificazione della tua Chiesa. Per Cristo nostro Signore.

Pope Francis decreed in 2018 that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, be celebrated every year on the Monday after Pentecost. The story behind Mater Ecclesiae is older than Pope Francis. At Vatican II, Pope Paul VI formally proclaimed Mary “Mother of the Church” in 1964, meaning Mother of all Christian people, both faithful and pastors. Pope Francis later placed that title into the universal Roman Calendar so the whole Church would celebrate it annually.
The image you mention is the Mater Ecclesiae mosaic in St. Peter’s Square. After the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981, he wanted an image of Our Lady placed in the square because he believed the Virgin Mary had protected him. The mosaic was made in 1981 and placed on the façade between the San Damaso courtyard and St. Peter’s Square.
Under the image are John Paul II’s coat of arms and his motto Totus Tuus—written on the mosaic as TOTVS TVVS, using the old Latin style where V is used for U. Totus Tuus means “Totally yours” or “All yours.” John Paul II explained that these words mean “total belonging to Jesus through Mary.” Beneath the mosaic is the inscription Mater Ecclesiae, Latin for Mother of the Church.
