OFFICER DANNY BOYLE AOH DIVISION 88

Danny Boyle was the son of Division 88's current President, Patrick Boyle, a former Central Detective with the Philadelphia Police Department. Martin de Tours Grade School and Archbishop Ryan High School, both located in Northeast Philadelphia. Following his father's footsteps, Danny joined the Philadelphia Police Department on February 5, 1990

and was assigned to the 26th District at Girard & Montgomery Avenues. On February 4, 1991, while patrolling the streets of North Philadelphia, Danny found what proved to be a stolen automobile. Upon stopping the vehicle, the operator jumped from the car and began firing a 9mm handgun. He died of this wound two days later on February 6, 1991, after having served the citizens of Philadelphia for one year and one day. Danny Boyle was only twenty-one years old. The Officer Danny Boyle Division of the Ancient Order of Hiberians was formed a little over a year later by Michael Creedon and Jerry McMonagle, Jr, the son of Division 88's past Vice President Jerry McMonagle, Sr. Both men decided to start a division of the AOH in Philadelphia based on their experiences from a trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Knowing what happened to Danny Boyle, they contacted Pat Boyle and asked for permission to name the new Division after his son. The number "88" was assigned to the new Division. The first meeting of the Danny Boyle AOH Division 88 was held in April of 1992 at Loretta's Pub located at 7681 Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The official Charter date of the Division is May19, 1992, Although it is one of Philadelphia's youngest divisions, the Danny Boyle AOH/LAOH is a four-time winner (1996, 1998 and co-winners in 2000 & 2001) of the Mayor Tate Award, the Spirit Award recognizing the group that best honors the theme of the Philadelphia Saint Patrick's Day Parade. The Division currently meets at the St Katherine Drexel Knights of Columbus Hall located in the Somerton section of Northeast Philadelphia, at 15000 Bustleton Avenue. Since his tragic murder, the Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Fund was developed. The purpose of the Scholarship Fund is to help preserve Danny's memory and to assist as many families as possible with the education of their children. The Fund is mostly based at the High School level, but it expanded in 2001 to offer it's first College scholarships. Ninety-Eight percent of all money raised is used for tuition. As of this writing, the Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Fund has provided over a half million dollars to several hundred students in their pursuit of a Catholic education. The Funds money is raised through various methods and annual events, including golf tournaments, chance drives, corporate and individual donations, beef & beers, etc.
