Happy Feast of St. Augustine of Hippo! Possibly the most famous artistic interpretation of the great saint and Doctor of the Church is "Saint Augustine" by 17th century French artist Philippe de Champaigne. Depicted with his flaming heart in one hand, passionate and alive for Christ, and a writing quill in the other, he experiences a burst of divine light, symbolized with the word "Veritas," or, "Truth." Beneath his feet his tramples heretical writings while at work on his own devotional writings. What symbolism strikes you most in this painting?

The painting is now displayed in Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California.

Day 9 of Our Novena to Saint Augustine: https://conta.cc/4gxucPg

Today's reflection reminds us that the beauty and joys of this world are signs that point us toward God, the source of all true happiness. A sunset, the stars, and the love of others can bring us joy, but our hearts ultimately long for something deeper—God Himself. May we recognize His presence in our everyday lives, know who we are as His beloved children, and grow in love for Him with hope that never ends.

Day 8 of Our Novena to Saint Augustine: https://conta.cc/4giqhqI

Today's reflection beautifully deepens Saint Augustine’s understanding of charity as a love that does not abandon. It means loving the whole person—even when we see their weaknesses and sins. Like a true brother or sister, we rejoice in another’s goodness and gently grieve when they struggle, always desiring their healing and growth.

Day 7 of Our Novena to Saint Augustine: https://conta.cc/4qHGr0w

Today's reflection invites us to see spiritual growth not as a straight path, but as a spiral. We may find ourselves returning to the same struggles, questions, or lessons, but we are not necessarily returning as the same person. Each experience can deepen us and prepare us to receive wisdom in a new way.

Day 6 of Our Novena to Saint Augustine: https://conta.cc/4gHnPtW

Today's reflection is centered on friendship with God through attentive listening. It also highlights the importance of solitude and silence. Friendship grows when we spend time with someone, and Augustine suggests that the same is true of our relationship with God. In quiet moments, we can become more aware of what is happening within our hearts and more receptive to what God may be saying.

Day 5 of Our Novena to Saint Augustine: https://conta.cc/45GtNVM

Today's reflection captures an important turning point in Augustine’s spiritual journey. A deeper way to understand it is through the contrast between pride and humility. Christ’s humility exposes Augustine’s own pride. Augustine had wanted to rise toward God through his intellect, but Christ shows him that the path to God begins by humbly accepting grace. In this sense, Jesus is both the destination and the guide: He is Truth and Life, but He also becomes the humble means by which Augustine is able to approach God.

Day 4 of Our Novena to Saint Augustine: https://conta.cc/4g8Sy34

“True listening is more than hearing” may be the most important lesson from today’s reflection. We can hear Scripture, a homily, a prayer, or even a quiet prompting within our conscience without allowing it to affect us. Listening becomes transformative when we permit what we hear to reach the will.

Lord, give me a heart that truly listens. Remove the blindness that keeps me from seeing your presence. Give me the humility to hear, the courage to respond, and the grace to turn my heart toward you again and again. Lead me where you want me to go, and help me trust that wherever you lead me is ultimately home. Amen.
