Five hundred years ago today, a group of young adults revolted against the theocracy that ruled them. They re-baptized each other on confession of faith, proclaiming that membership in the body of Christ is not a genetic inheritance or a citizenship card. They proclaimed a faith in the radical nonviolent way of Jesus.

For the last five hundred years -- 341 of them here in Germantown -- we have kept working on this commitment. We can mark this anniversary, alongside our Anabaptist siblings all over the world, by listening to the new podcast from Mennonite Action, by showing up for New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia - Nuevo Movimiento Santuario this Saturday at 2pm, and by praying for each other and reaching out to each other. Anabaptists have always known that we make Christ known in the world by our living. As Anna Jansz wrote to her son before her martyrdom in 1539 at the age of 30,

"But where you hear of a poor, simple, cast-off little flock, which is despised and rejected by the world, join them; for where you hear of the cross, there is Christ. . . . Love your neighbor. Deal with an open, warm heart. Give your bread to the hungry, clothe the naked, and do not tolerate having two of anything, because there are always those who are in need."
