Church of the Advocate

Church of the Advocate The Advocate is a fixture in North Central Philadelphia with a long history of community service and social justice activism.

An anchor in largely African-American North Central Philadelphia, the George W. South Memorial Church of the Advocate is a landmark in the religious, social and architectural history of the United States. Built as a memorial to the merchant and civic leader George W. South, the church was the centerpiece of a sprawling complex including a chapel, parish house, curacy and rectory. Intended for serv

ice as the Episcopal Cathedral of Philadelphia, The Church of the Advocate is considered one of the best American examples of Gothic Revival style and the only major building of its period based systematically on French sources. No other church in America has been built in such a grand scale specifically for the working class. Also, none offers such a comprehensive repertoire of the Gothic Revival architecture: complete programs of lavish architectural sculpture; stained glass windows by Clayton & Bell, one of the leading English firms of the period; a full apparatus of flying but-tresses and an orientation to the true East. The church demonstrates the Ruskinian doctrine of involving workmen in the design process, echoing the socially progressive programs that are part of the Advocate’s history and in contrast to the industrial, mechanized age in which it was created. The Church’s Architect, Charles Burns, is recognized as one of the most prominent church architects in the late 19th and early 20th century. His work includes over 50 churches some of which are the Church of the Savior, now the Episcopal Cathedral of Philadelphia; Church of The Redeemer, Bryn Mawr; Christ Church Cathedral, Salina, Kansas; and Calvary Church, Sioux Falls, South Dakota in addition to the Union League of Philadelphia’s prominent clubhouse in Center City Philadelphia. The socially-conscious goals of the Church of the
Advocate’s founders, who specified that the church should be “free for all time” (abolishing the practice of pew rent) continue. The Advocate became a center of activism during the Civil Rights Movement embracing the cause of African-American and women’s rights. It was the site of several nationally significant events of these movements including the National Conference of Black Power (1968), the Black Panther Conference (1970) and the first ordination of women in the Episcopal Church (1974). An inspiring collection of large and vivid wall murals com-missioned by Rev. Paul Washington records the “stations” of the African American experience in this country. As in medieval churches where art served to illustrate and reinforce this liturgical message these murals draw on Christian scripture to dramatically illuminate parallels in African American history. Together, the medieval revival presentation of the building and the modern murals document the critical social role played by America’s inner city churches. These murals were created between 1973 and 1976 by Walter Edmonds and Richard Watson. These impressive and of-ten contentious “art of protest” were inspired by Biblical pas-sages of oppression and captivity that continues to find life in the African American story. In 1974 the Church played a key role in women’s and religious history as the site of the “irregular” ordination of the first group of 11 women ordained into the priesthood of the Episcopal Church. In anticipation of this event the parish ratified the following statement: “The goals of the Advocate have always been to move towards one world, one people, and one love concept. We are not afraid to take any step or measure that will make that concept a reality.” Within two years the Episcopal Church officially authorized the ordination of women.

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes, and it’s exciting to see things starting to take shape. We’re looking forward to sharing more as the work continues and progress builds.

Last year, we shared the challenges facing our parish. Today, we’re proud to say restoration is underway. Work has begun on the baptistry, an important first step toward restoring the entire sanctuary ceiling. Restoring our house of worship is a top priority, but we can’t do it without you.

Please help us raise $40,000 in matching funds to unlock a $100,000 grant. Your support will keep restoration moving forward and help build a sustainable future for the Advocate as a welcoming, vibrant home for the Philadelphia community.

Thank you for standing with us, the best is yet to come!

On This Day- July 29, 1974

At the Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia, Rev. Paul M. Washington opened his church doors - and history was made.

51 years ago today, we commemorate the Eleven brave women who forever changed the Episcopal Church. Known as the Philadelphia Eleven, these trailblazing women became the first Female priests in the Episcopal Church, defying centuries of tradition and sparking a movement for gender equality in religious leadership.

Their names are:

Merrill Bittner
Alla Bozarth-Campbell
Alison Cheek
Emily Hewitt
Carter Haywood
Suzanne Hiatt
Marie Moorefield
Jeanette Piccard
Betty Boone Schiess
Katrina Swanson
Nancy Wittig

We also remember the courageousness of the woman who served as crucifer during the ordinations, who lead these women to the altar, The Advocate's very own Barbara Harris

Hosted in a church known for its commitment to Civil Rights, this moment was about more than ordination - it was about liberation.

Their courage reshaped the Episcopal Church - and religious leadership forever

Please read:

For nearly 140 years, the George W. South Memorial Church of the Advocate has been a staple of social justice in the North Central Philadelphia community. Since its inception in 1886 the consciousness of the South family, its founders, provided an architecturally significant Gothic Revival cathedral to a working-class immigrant community for free worship for all time.

In the church’s history it has shined as a center of activism during the Civil Rights
Movement, engaging in the causes of African American and Women’s Rights. Its historical hosting of important events, including the National Conference of Black Power (1968), The
Black Panther Conference (1970), and the first ordination of women in the Episcopal
Church (1974) gave the Advocate a towering social justice presence in North Philadelphia. The spirit and heartbeat of the Advocate is felt and echoed in American history because of its social justice activism.

As of 2025, only two of our four historic buildings are being used. In 2022, the eastern wall of the parish hall collapsed, causing both that building and courtyard to be inaccessible. In May 2024, insurance coverage was removed from our Sanctuary space due to non-structural repairs needed to the ceiling. The cost to reopen the sanctuary is estimated at $3.2 million and the repair for the entire campus is estimated at $15 million.

The Church has formed a committee of preservationists, architects and local institutional leaders to create an preservation trust to act as the stewards to the property and as the hosts of community programming. This formation will allow us to create a master plan to seek funding for repairs and current uses of the campus. This effort will allow us to continue to be a beacon of ministry, art, justice, and education to North Philadelphia. In partnership and with the pastoral support from the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, we hope and pray we will continue to be a cornerstone in North Philadelphia for another 140 years.

Plans such as these take time, and results should not be expected overnight. Please bear with us while we re-envision the Church of the Advocate.

Please join us for Sunday worship in the Madeira Center (2123 Gratz Street) at 10:30am.

Thank You All,

-The Church of the Advocate congregation
