Midnight Comfort Hour Prayer- Monday, Oct. 14, 2024
Target Prayer: Praying for Seniors who work beyond retirement age due to financial needs.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 God’s Word Translation- (GWT)
On Tuesday, I left the house to walk my dog. My neighbor was leaving his house with a brief case and lunch pouch. He leaned down and rubbed my dog’s head, and I saw the dark circles beneath his eyes. Sadness filled my heart as I wished him a good evening. His wife shared with me, some years ago, that this gentleman retired from civic duties, only to learn that he did not have the social security credits needed to receive a social security check of an amount that would offset his retirement. The amount he received was not enough to support his monthly household needs. As a result, he returned to work to increase his monthly social security payments. The wife is unable to work due to numerous back and knee surgeries. We are persecuted, but God does not leave us. We are hurt sometimes, but we are not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:9 (GWT). I could see the hurt in his eyes as he turned to get in the truck to go to work.
One of my friends retired, at the age of 62, from the County Board of Assistance with a great pension and social security check. However, she was in deep debt and had a gambling problem. She went to work stocking greeting cards in markets. That didn’t last for long as the bending and stooping caused her great pain. After signing up to become a caretaker for two mentally challenged women, two and a half years later she was out of debt. The Lord also delivered her from gambling. This woman was able to leave a substantial inheritance to her son when she died.
Currently, I have a relative who just turned sixty (60) and realized she can’t retire because her bills are much too high. She has helped her children, to her own peril. Even though she has an excellent job with a pension, it will not be enough with her social security check to provide her with the quality of life she is accustomed to living. By following a strict budget for the next five years, she hopes to retire comfortably and debt free.
Unfortunately, many families do not discuss budgets, pensions, social security checks or saving the money we need to deal with inflation and the continuous cost of living we face in our society. Some don’t begin preparing or planning for retirement in their early years of work. People are living longer and the terrain of our economy changing. Then, when we reach retirement age fear grips us as we search for employment, and our bodies scream with pain as we push it to keep working because our expenses need to be paid.
According to statistics, 17 million Americans age 65+ are economically insecure living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL) ($30,120 per year for a single person in 2024). These older adults struggle with rising housing and health care bills, inadequate nutrition, lack of access to transportation, diminished savings, and job loss. To change this dynamic, we must teach our children and grandchildren the importance of self-control, saving, insurance, giving, and planning. That may help them be better prepared to enter the latter years of life confidently and to enjoy their retirement years.
We invite you to join us on the Midnight Comfort Hour, Monday, October 14, 2024, at 10 pm (EST), where our Target Prayer will be " Praying for Seniors who work beyond retirement age due to financial needs". Our intercessors will be standing by to pray with and for you regarding any needs you may have, not just those related to our target prayer focus. In addition to our dedicated time of prayer, hear a song from one of our Ministers, and a word from the Lord, delivered by Elder Theo Gladden, to encourage you.
