Today's Reading from the Works of Saint Augustine:
Confessions, 2.5.10
There is truly a fascination caused by beautiful bodies like gold and silver and other such things. Earthly honor also has its own special value as does the power to rule. This life itself possesses its own appeal. Friendship among human beings brings a sweetness through the loving bond that unites hearts. Sin comes about only when, be cause of an immoderate desire for such lower things, the higher good is deserted. True, these earthly things have their delights, but they cannot be compared to the God who made them all.
Today's Reflection:
Loving Good Things Immoderately
Our problem with this world is not that it is bad, but that sometimes it overpowers us with its appeal. We begin to love it too much so that it becomes the primary object of our love; when this happens we become trapped here by the delightful things that surround us. At the same time, Augustine says, "When we are commanded 'Do not love these things' this does not mean that we should no longer eat or drink or beget children. It only means that we should limit our desire so that these things do not shackle us by our love for them" (Commentary on the Epistle of John, 2.12). All things in this world are good because all reflect the goodness of God. But it would be a shame if we became so enthralled by God's reflection that we no longer yearn to see him face to face.

Today's Gospel Reading:
Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.”
