Yesterday, we were grateful to join our Methodist siblings in DC to advocate for immigration justice. Check out these great photos (you might recognize some people!) and then contact your reps today to demand the protection, humane treatment of, and right to due process for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Every year, Arch Street UMC and The Center-Philadelphia open our doors on Christmas morning and welcome our unhoused neighbors to enjoy a warm, nourishing breakfast.

We are so grateful this year! Our restoration projects are far enough along that we are able to offer guests a relaxing sit-down experience in the sanctuary for the very first time!

As we increase our capacity and expand our services to meet the needs of our most vulnerable community members, ASUMC and The Center are calling on our dedicated supporters to empower this very special Christmas. Volunteer with us on 12/25 from 7-11am!

Sign up to volunteer on our website: shorturl.at/omAMN or reach out to Brian Graves ([email protected]) for more information.

In November, during a time of critical need for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity, we came together to raise $1700 in just three days! Thanks to your support supplemented by the work of several volunteers and staff, we were able to serve an additional 240 meals over those four weeks.

The federal government shutdown is over, however, the needs of our unsheltered neighbors are still rising. On this , we invite you to give of your time and resources in the following ways that will extend support for our neighbors this winter and beyond:

1. Contact your elected officials and ask them to support the Shelter First Act (SB 1089 and HB 2028) which seeks to prevent the criminalization of homelessness in Pennsylvania. Visit: palegis.us/find-my-legislator

2. Join us for Homeless Person's Memorial Day on Thursday, December 18th at Arch Street Meeting House (320 Arch St.) as we honor and remember those who have passed. Doors at 4:30pm, service at 4:45pm, dinner from 6-7pm.

3. Drop-off donations (coats, jackets, hoodies, sweatpants, gloves, hats, scarves, etc.) to 55 N Broad St. Monday through Thursday from 10am to 2pm.

4. Sign up to volunteer with us! Beginning this week, Grace Cafe's Sunday evening meal will be served in the Sanctuary for the first time since March 2024. Sign up by visiting thecenterphiladelphia.org/volunteer.

As we approach a season celebrating the arrival of our Messiah who was born into homelessness with no choice but a stable trough for a crib, we recognize that our unhoused and unsheltered neighbors face the reality of having no choice but to sleep outside AND are criminalized for having to do so.

This is not only cruel and a misuse of public resources that worsens our current affordability crisis--this goes against the very foundational beliefs we hold as Methodists to honor and protect the rights and dignity of all persons created by God.

Yesterday, our State Senator Nikil Saval joined with Lancaster Representative Izzy Smith-Wade-El to host a press conference upon introducing legislation in the PA House and Senate which seeks to decriminalize homelessness across the Commonwealth. Our very own Tess Feiler was able to attend and support the press conference which featured representatives from Project HOME, Homeless Advocacy Project, and more.

According to the memo released by Sen. Saval and others, the legislation seeks to enforce that, "before imposing any penalties, municipalities must first provide adequate shelter."

We must protect the rights and dignity of our unhoused and unsheltered neighbors by contacting legislators today to ask them to support this important legislation in the House and the Senate.
