National Shrine of St. John Neumann

National Shrine of St. John Neumann Located in the Redemptorist parish of St. Peter the Apostle, Philadelphia, PA, the National Shrine of St. John Neumann welcomes pilgrims from around world.
(496)

When John Neumann, the fourth bishop of Philadelphia and the first man to become a Redemptorist in America, died on January 5th, 1860, his body was brought for burial to the local parish of his Redemptorist brothers. He was interred with solemnity in the crypt of St. Peter the Apostle Church. Due to his reputation for sanctity, Neumann's tomb quickly became a popular site for pilgrimage and prayer

and the crypt became chapel and a shrine. One hundred and seventeen years after his death the Roman Catholic Church officially declared John Neumann a saint, making him the first, and so far the only American male to receive that honor.

The "Little Bishop!" That was his nickname.

We had a life-size image of St. John Neumann made so people could take a photo next to him. You can see in this photo how he got his nickname.

He may have been small in stature but he was a giant in pastoral practice!

Lighting a small Votive Candle at the National Shrine.

You will find small tea-light type candles for use in the Shrine in our Gift Shop. Just ask any member of the Gift Shop staff, because they are located behind the counter. You can have as many votive candles as you wish.

There is no set donation for a votive candle. You can leave any offering you wish in the donation box mounted near the Gift Shop doorway or in any donation receptacle in the Shrine.

We thank you for your support of our shrine ministry and know that we are praying for your intentions every day.

Happy Birthday Saint John Neumann!

Why not light a candle for him today?

You can do this at home as you gather for a family meal.

Or you can have us light a candle for you.

Either way... Happy Birthday to you St John Neumann!

Special shout-out to the students and staff from the University of Pittsburgh who are members of the Vagabond Missions. They offered to clean up our Shrine pews as part of a service project.

They did a wonderful job and we are very grateful! Blessings on your ministry and studies!
