Happy Easter! Christus Resurrexit! Christ is Risen! Alleluia!

For Christ, arising from the dead,
from conquered hell victorious sped,
he thrust the tyrant down to chains,
and Paradise for man regains.
(Ad cenam Agni providi, 5th century Latin hymn)

We encourage you all during this octave of Easter to exchange the traditional Easter greeting:
Christ is risen!
Response: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Every place where Christianity has ancient roots this greeting exists in the local or liturgical language. Additionally, the Church grants us an indulgence for exchanging the greeting during the octave of Easter (until next Sunday).

Latin: Christus resurrexit! Vere resurrexit!
Spanish: Cristo ha resucitado! En verdad ha resucitado!
Greek: Christos anesti! Alithos anesti!
Ukranian: Khristos voskres! Voistinu voskres!
French: Le Christ est réssuscité! En verite il est réssuscité!
Italian: Cristo e' risorto! Veramente e' risorto!
German: Christus ist auferstanden! Wahrlich Er ist auferstanden!

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The impending winter snowstorm for this Sunday, January 25, 2026, and the corresponding state of emergency declared by the City of Philadelphia, reminds everyone to make prudential and safe decisions regarding travel.

While the obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sunday remains, if the weather impedes people from attending Mass safely, especially the elderly, then they should remain at home. A good alternative is to attend the Saturday evening Anticipated Mass ahead of the storm.

For those who cannot attend Mass, then time should be spent reading the Word of God or in prayer to mark the Lord’s Day. Masses will not be cancelled to provide for those who can and will attend Holy Mass for Sunday. Please check parish information sources in the event the Sunday Mass schedule is modified. Be assured of my prayers and blessing for all of you and your families as I rely on your prayers for me.

Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D.
Archbishop of Philadelphia
