When Judgment Begins at the House of God

📖 1 Peter 4:17

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God…”

There is a word the Church must hear in this hour: God is calling His house to examination.

Before we condemn the world, we must be willing to examine ourselves. Before we point to the sins of society, we must look within the sanctuary. Before we demand accountability from others, we must be willing to submit ourselves to the authority of God’s Word.

Judgment begins at the house of God.

It begins with the pulpit.
It begins with leadership.
It begins with stewardship.
It begins with integrity.
It begins with the hearts of God’s people.

The Church is not exempt from God’s standards simply because we gather in His name. A title does not excuse misconduct. Position does not eliminate accountability. Tradition does not override truth. And the appearance of righteousness cannot take the place of genuine obedience.

God’s house belongs to God, and everything entrusted to His people must be handled with reverence, honesty, and accountability.

James 3:1 reminds us that those who teach will be judged more strictly. Luke 16:10 teaches us that faithfulness in little things matters. And Psalm 139:23–24 gives us a prayer that every believer should be willing to pray:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.”

This is not a call to attack the Church. It is a call for the Church to return to God.

It is not about tearing down people. It is about allowing the Word of God to correct us, cleanse us, and call us back to righteousness.

When truth is spoken, let us not be so defensive that we refuse to examine it. When concerns arise, let us seek the facts. When correction is needed, let us humble ourselves. And when repentance is necessary, let us not allow pride to stand in the way.

The Church cannot be a light to the world while refusing to let the light of God’s Word shine within its own walls.

WEEK ONE: DISCOVERING YOUR PURPOSE

Theme: I Must Know Who God Has Called Me to Be

Key Scripture: Judges 4:4–5

Weekly objective: To understand that purpose begins with our relationship with God, not with recognition, position, or the approval of other people.

Deborah lived during a difficult period in Israel’s history. The people had been oppressed for twenty years under the Canaanite king Jabin. Yet in the middle of this troubled season, Deborah was serving as a prophetess and judge.

She was already fulfilling her responsibilities before the battle ever began.

That is an important lesson: Your purpose is not always revealed on a platform. Sometimes it is developed in the quiet place where you learn to hear God and faithfully serve.

Day 1 — Recognizing Your Calling

Read: Judges 4:1–5

Focus: God can use you in difficult seasons.

Deborah’s story begins during a time of oppression, not a time of peace. Her circumstances did not prevent her from serving the people of God.

Sometimes we assume we will fulfill our purpose when life becomes easier, when people understand us, or when everything around us falls into place.

But Deborah reminds us that God can work through us even when the circumstances are challenging.

Your purpose is not determined by the condition of your surroundings. It is shaped by your relationship with God and your willingness to be faithful to Him.

Study Questions

1. What do Judges 4:1–5 reveal about the condition of Israel?
2. What responsibilities did Deborah carry?
3. What circumstances in your life have made it difficult to recognize or pursue your purpose?
4. Are you waiting for everything around you to change before you obey God?

Daily Application: Write down three ways you believe God has equipped you to serve Him. Consider your gifts, your experiences, and the lessons you have learned.

Prayer:
Father, help me recognize the purpose You have for my life. Teach me not to measure my calling by my circumstances or the opinions of others. Help me remain faithful wherever You have placed me. Give me a willing heart and a spirit that seeks Your direction. In Jesus’ name, amen.

COME GO WITH ME: A 30-DAY JOURNEY THROUGH THE LIFE OF DEBORAH

Purpose. Wisdom. Courage. Leadership. Obedience.

Have you ever considered studying the lives of the men and women God used throughout Scripture to understand what their lives can teach us today?

I want to invite you to join me on a 30-day journey through the life of Deborah, the prophetess and judge of Israel, whose story is recorded in Judges 4 and 5.

Why Deborah?

Deborah lived during a difficult period in Israel’s history. Her people were experiencing oppression, and the nation was in need of leadership, direction, and deliverance. Yet, in the midst of those challenging times, Deborah served as a judge and prophetess, communicating God’s direction and helping lead Israel toward victory.

Her story makes me ask some important questions:

What does it mean to walk in the purpose God has given us?

How do we exercise wisdom when the times around us are difficult?

Where do we find courage when obedience requires us to step forward?

And what can we learn from the people God raised up to serve during seasons of uncertainty?

These are some of the questions I want us to explore together.

When I speak of having a “Deborah spirit,” I am talking about cultivating the qualities her biblical story demonstrates: a willingness to serve, a heart attentive to God’s direction, wisdom in leadership, courage in difficult circumstances, and a readiness to act in obedience to Him.

This is not a study exclusively for women. Men, you are invited, too! Deborah’s life gives all of us an opportunity to examine what faithful leadership, godly courage, discernment, and obedience look like.

Over these 30 days, we will open our Bibles, study the Scriptures, reflect on what we learn, and consider how these biblical truths apply to our lives today.

We will not simply ask, “Who was Deborah?”

We will also ask, “What can her life teach me about my own walk with God?”

I believe there is value in studying the lives of biblical leaders—not to place them on pedestals, but to learn from their faith, their decisions, their challenges, and the ways God worked through them.

So, come go with me! Bring your Bible, bring a journal if you have one, and bring a heart that is willing to learn.

You do not have to be a Bible scholar. You do not have to have all the answers. You simply need a willingness to study God’s Word with an open heart.

Let’s journey together through the life of Deborah and discover what God can teach us about purpose, wisdom, courage, and faithful living in our own time.

COME GO WITH ME: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE LIVES OF BIBLICAL LEADERS

Have you ever read a story in the Bible and wondered what it would look like if you were living in that time?

What would your faith look like during a season of uncertainty? How would you respond when God called you to step forward? And what can the lives of those who walked before us teach us about how we live today?

I’ve been thinking about these questions, and I want to invite you to join me on a journey through the lives of people in the Bible.

We’re going to begin with Deborah, the prophetess and judge of Israel.

Her story is found in Judges 4 and 5, during a time when Israel was experiencing oppression and needed leadership and deliverance.

I want to understand her story more deeply—not just who she was, but what her life can teach us about faith, wisdom, courage, obedience, and trusting God during difficult times.

Because the truth is, we don’t have to live in biblical times to face difficult seasons. We still need wisdom when making decisions, courage when facing challenges, and faith when we cannot see what lies ahead.

And I believe there is something valuable about returning to the Scriptures, studying the lives of those who came before us, and asking what God wants us to learn.

I’m not coming to this journey with every answer. I’m coming with my Bible open, my heart ready to learn, and a willingness to allow the Word of God to challenge me, too.

Over the next 30 days, I want to study Deborah’s life and invite you to study along with me.

Men and women are welcome. You don’t have to be a Bible scholar. You don’t have to have all the answers. Just bring a willingness to read, reflect, ask questions, and grow.

We’ll begin with the Scriptures, take our time with the text, and consider how its lessons apply to our lives today.

So, let me ask you:

When was the last time you studied the life of someone in the Bible beyond what you already knew about them?

Back to opening our Bibles together.
Back to asking questions and seeking understanding.
Back to sharing what we’re learning and encouraging one another.
Back to fellowship, prayer, and breaking bread together.

Acts 2:42–47 reminds us of a community devoted to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer.

That picture of community has been on my heart.

As a minister, I know that I am still a student of the Word. I don’t have every answer, and I believe there is value in coming together to study, listen, ask questions, and grow in understanding.

That’s the heart behind Meet Me at the Table, a Bible study and fellowship community under Back2Acts.

We’ll begin with a 30-day journey through the life of Deborah, the prophetess and judge of Israel. Together, we’ll explore her story and consider what it teaches us about purpose, wisdom, courage, obedience, and leadership during difficult times.

And this is bigger than one person leading every discussion. As our community grows, I envision different Table Hosts helping facilitate conversations, share insights, and create opportunities for fellowship.

A SEAT AT THE TABLE: WHO ARE WE MAKING ROOM FOR?

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…” — Matthew 6:33

I saw something today that made me stop and think. We often come to God asking Him to make room for us, bless us, open doors for us, and meet our needs. And there is nothing wrong with bringing our needs to Him.

But what happens when we become the host instead of the guest?

Are we making room for God in our decisions, our conversations, our relationships, and the way we treat people? Are we making room at the table for those who are hurting, those who feel forgotten, and those who may not have anything to offer us in return?

The early church in Acts didn’t just gather together. They shared, prayed, fellowshipped, and cared for one another. Their faith was demonstrated by how they lived. (Acts 2:42–47)

Maybe seeking the Kingdom first means more than asking God for a seat at the table. Maybe it also means being willing to pull out a chair for somebody else.

Something to chew on: Am I only concerned about the seat God has for me, or am I also concerned about who might need a seat beside me?

At Back2Acts, we believe the table should be a place of fellowship, love, truth, and room for one another.

Let’s get back to the heart of what it means to be the church.

Back2Acts: Stay the Course

You can wake up with peace in your heart and good intentions for the day—and still, distractions will try to find you. But remember what the Word says: “When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.” (Romans 7:21)

Not every invitation deserves your attendance.
Not every argument deserves your voice.
Not every negative moment deserves your energy.

Stay focused. Stay grounded. Please God, not people.

Some will overlook all you’ve done and focus on what you didn’t do—but don’t carry that weight. You are one person, doing your best.

Take care of yourself today. Protect your peace.
Today is about walking in purpose, not pressure.

In the early church, they didn’t just gather—they valued one another.

They broke bread together.
They showed up for each other.
They honored connection.

But now?
People want access without responsibility.
They want your encouragement… but don’t return it.
They want your presence… but treat you like an option.

At some point, you have to recognize:
Access is a privilege, not a right.

You can’t keep pouring into people
who treat you like a liability
when you’ve been an asset in their life.

That’s not bitterness—that’s wisdom.

Acts 2 wasn’t built on one-sided relationships.
It was built on mutual care, consistency, and love.

So yes… keep your heart right.
But also keep your boundaries clear.

Because even at the table—
not everyone gets a permanent seat.

Back2Acts 🍞 | A Seat at the Table

What happens when we hear the Word… but don’t search it for ourselves?

The early church didn’t just receive teaching—they went back to the Word.

Acts 17:11
“…they received the word… and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

This is the heart of Back2Acts.

No titles. No pressure. No performance.
Just people who are willing to seek truth together.

2 Timothy 2:15
“Study… rightly dividing the word of truth.”

That responsibility belongs to all of us.

This isn’t about calling anyone out—
and that includes me.

Don’t just listen to the teacher.
Don’t just listen to the room.

Go back to the Word.

1 John 4:1
“Try the spirits whether they are of God…”

Because truth matters.

And truth brings freedom.
(John 8:32)

A Seat at the Table means we all come hungry…
and we all go back to the Word.
