Asbury Theological Seminary has been removed from the United Methodist Church’s approved ordination school list after refusing to abandon its biblical conviction that marriage is the covenant union of one man and one woman. Rather than changing its doctrine to match the denomination’s revised position on same-sex marriage, Asbury chose to remain faithful to what it believes Scripture clearly teaches.

Seminary leaders said they were transparent throughout the process and made no attempt to hide where they stand. Even so, the school would not trade doctrinal faithfulness for institutional approval. President David Watson emphasized that Asbury’s commitments to God’s Word and the historic Christian understanding of marriage remain unchanged, regardless of denominational consequences.

For many Christians, the decision has become a clear example of what it means to defend biblical truth when compromise would be easier. Supporters say Asbury’s response reflects a conviction that marriage is not something the Church is free to redefine, but something God has already spoken on in Scripture. In that sense, the school’s removal is being seen not simply as a loss of status, but as a public stand for the authority of the Bible.
