Brief Description:
The church was founded by Christ on the Day of Pentecost, A.D. 33 (Acts 2), just after His ascension back to heaven. It was first established in America in the early 1800s by Barton W. Stone, Thomas Campbell, and Alexander Campbell. Concern
ing the worship of God, the church of Christ is known for its strict adherence to the New Testament. We believe that the New Testament is the only rule for faith and practice in religious matters (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and that it must authorize all that is done in Christian worship (Colossians 3:17; Revelation 22:18–19). Because of the churches adherence to the New Testament, we practice full immersion baptism (Acts 8:29-39), a-cappella music (Ephesians 5:19), taking of the Lord’s Supper weekly on Sundays (Luke 22:15-20, Acts 2:42, Acts 20:7). In the New Testament church, to be saved and added to the church, an individual must Hear the Word (Romans 10:13), Believe what they have heard (Hebrew 11:6), Repent from their sins (Acts 2:38), Confess that Jesus died for their sins (Romans 10:9), be fully immersed through baptism (Acts 8:29-39), live faithfully while adhering to the commandments throughout the Bible (Revelation 2:10). The church of Christ is organized with elders (1 Timothy 3), deacons (1 Timothy 3), preachers, and members as in New Testament times (Ephesians 4:10-12). We believe that Jesus is the Son of God that the scriptures in the Bible are inspired of God (2 Timothy 3:16– 17), and that Jesus will return to take His kingdom (church) home to God (1 Corinthians 15:24). We emphasize that every saved member of the church is a minister for the gospel and they must preach the gospel (Acts 8:4, Matthew 28:19-20), live godly lives (Titus 2:11–12), and help individuals in need (James 1:27).
