St. Mary's Monastery

St. Mary's Monastery A community of contemplative Benedictine monks in Petersham, Massachusetts, USA St. Mary's Monastery is a community of contemplative Benedictine monks.

We are a daughterhouse of Pluscarden Abbey in Scotland and members of the Subiaco-Cassinese Congregation of Benedictines. Contemplative means that we do not have any outside apostolate like a school, but our primary work is prayer - the coming together (seven times a day) in church for the the Liturgy of the Hours and the celebration of Mass, lectio divina (prayerful reading of Scripture) and pers

onal prayer. However, manual labor and hospitality (via our guesthouse) is an important part of the Benedictine charism. We celebrate the Liturgy in Latin Gregorian Chant while following the directives of the Second Vatican Council. Our Liturgy is open to the public and celebrated in conjunction with the Benedictine nuns of St. Scholastica Priory. We are "twin communities".

Happy Easter! It does not seem to be a coincidence that Easter coincides with spring – the season of rebirth and renewal. The Church has long seen a relationship between the mystery of the Resurrection and the natural rhythms of time. The entire created world—sun, moon, and seasons—quietly points toward the Resurrection. The great Latin poet St. Venantius Fortunatus alludes to this in one of his hymns:

Earth her joy confesses, clothing her for spring;
All fresh gifts returned with her returning King.
Blooms in every meadow, leaves on every bow,
Speak His sorrow ended, hail His triumph now:
‘Welcome, happy morning!’ age to age shall say.

Happy Easter from all the monks of St. Mary’s!

The results of the Abbatial election at Pluscarden Abbey has been released and so we pass along this announcement from Pluscarden's press release:

The Abbot President of the Subiaco-Cassinese Benedictine Congregation, Dom Ignasi Fossa, with his Council of Assistants, has appointed Dom Simon Piątkowski as Prior Administrator of Pluscarden, until the next regular canonical Visitation: that is, until June 2027. This decision was recommended to the President by our Abbot Visitor, Dom Cuthbert Brogan of Farnborough Abbey, who reached it together with his Provincial Council.

At the Abbatial election held at Pluscarden on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th November 2024, no candidate emerged with sufficient votes to become the community's fourth Abbot. According to our Constitutions, in an Abbatial election only four ballots are held. In the first three ballots, a two-thirds majority is required for election. In the fourth ballot, only a simple or absolute majority is required. If no candidate at the fourth ballot gains sufficient votes, it is for the Visitor to propose to the Abbot President a Prior Administrator to govern the community for a set term.

Dom Simon is the youngest member of the Pluscarden Community in solemn vows. He was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1979. While at University there, he played volleyball to a semi-professional level. Afterwards he went on to Essex University for further studies, gaining a doctorate in the field of Ethnology. He made his first profession at Pluscarden on 14th September 2011. Before his Ordination he gained a further theology degree by distance learning from the Dominican University on-line program "Dom-Uni". Dom Simon has served the community in many different ways: most recently acting as guest master.

Friends of the community should be reassured that the recent election took place very peacefully, in an atmosphere of both open frankness and fraternal charity. There has been no sense of division or crisis among the brethren. All are grateful to Abbot Cuthbert, who presided over the election with great competence. Not only was his calm efficiency much appreciated by all, but also his words of wisdom and encouragement.

Normally the Abbot Visitor would carry out the formal installation of the new Superior. But in the circumstances, being no longer present at Pluscarden, Abbot Cuthbert has demitted this task to Abbot Anselm.

On July 1, the community at Pluscarden announced the resignation of Abbot Anselm. Our community and theirs had known for a while that he had desired to step down after a long career of being in charge. Pluscarden had their canonical visitation in mid-June, and after consultation with the Abbot Visitor and the community, his resignation was granted. Here is the press release:

After twenty-one years as local Superior of St. Mary’s Monastery, Petersham, (thirteen years as Novicemaster), Sixteen years as Abbot Visitor of the English Province of the Subiaco-Cassinese Congregation and Member of the Abbot President’s Council of Visitors, and Thirteen years as Abbot of Pluscarden, Abbot Anselm Atkinson O.S.B.’s resignation has been confirmed by Abbot President Guillermo L. Arboleda T., O.S.B. of the Subiaco-Cassinese Congregation of the Order of St. Benedict, who thanks him for “long and faithful service both as superior of Pluscarden and as visitor, praying the Lord to reward him in full.”

We give thanks to God for his gift to us of Abbot Anselm, and to Abbot Anselm for his many years of love and service to our Community. May he reap the rewards he has earned, here and hereafter.
Prior and Community,
Pluscarden Abbey

There will not be an Abbatial election until at least October. In the meantime, Father Giles Conacher, the Prior, is in charge.
