When danger⚠️ strikes, most people instinctively move away from it.🏃‍♂️💨 Fire, violence, accidents, and disasters trigger a natural desire to find protection and safety.🛟 Yet first responders🚨⛑️ do the opposite. Firefighters,🚒 police officers,🚔 and paramedics🚑 run toward the very scenes others are fleeing. They enter burning buildings,🧯approach violent situations, and kneel beside the injured in chaotic moments. This response is unexpected because it goes against basic human instinct.

Today📆 God calls us to be spiritual first responders🚨 when we see people in trouble because of sin. Instead of self-preservation🛟 and comfort, we choose service⛑️🚑🚔🚒 to them and to our Lord.✝️ Our motive is the grace of God and his desire for the salvation of all mankind.❤️✝️

Please join us for worship ⛪️ tomorrow, Sunday, September 6th, on this Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost,🔥✝️🌿 with the sermon from our sermon series, ‘Unexpected Truths’🤔😯😃✝️

✝️📖
Ezekiel 33:7-11 The Lord told Ezekiel if he didn’t warn the Israelites about their sin, he was going to hold Ezekiel accountable.
Galatians 2:11-16 Paul wins his brother Cephas (Peter) over to the truth of the gospel.
Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus teaches us how to practice Christian discipline lovingly.

Some churches ⛪️ teach that if a person follows God, God responds by granting prosperity💰 and peace,🕊️as would only be expected. Today we see how that is nonsense. The Bible explains that if we are part of the Church of God,✝️ we will have bear crosses. Believers suffer in this world, sometimes just because they are believers.

Why bother? We carry our crosses in gratitude❤️ for Jesus carrying his cross, one too heavy for us because it was weighted down with our sin. We carry our crosses because we know that in those moments of struggle, we are forced to turn to Christ and rely on his strength.🏋️‍♂️ This is the unexpected path,🛣️ the one Jesus himself walked: the cross comes before the crown. ✝️👑

Please join us for worship ⛪️ tomorrow, Sunday, August 30th on this Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost,🔥✝️🌿 with the sermon from our sermon series, ‘Unexpected Truths’🤔😯😃✝️

✝️📖
Jeremiah 15:15-21 When Jeremiah complained about carrying his cross, the Lord called on him to repent and promised salvation.
Romans 8:18-25 No cross can compare with the crown of glory that is waiting.
Matthew 16:21-16 Jesus calls his Church to walk in his path. First comes the cross, then comes the crown.

Jesus asked, “Who do you say I am?”❓It’s the most important question in the world, and it is a question every human being must answer. The expected answer may be dead wrong.🚫 Some in Jesus’ day thought he was John the Baptist.🤔 Some thought he was the prophet Elijah who had come back from the dead.💀 Today plenty of people believe that Jesus existed. They think that Jesus was a wise teacher👨‍🏫 or a role model for love.❤️ Both answers are expected. Both miss the main point. Jesus is a real human being, the Son of Man. He is also Lord and Savior, the Son of the living God. This unexpected truth is the core of saving faith 😇✝️

Please join us for worship ⛪️ tomorrow, Sunday, August 23rd on this Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost,🔥✝️🌿 with the sermon from our sermon series, ‘Unexpected Truths’🤔😯😃✝️

✝️📖
Exodus 34:5-9 God proclaimed to Moses what he is like. The Church’s job is to proclaim to the world who Christ is and what he is like.
Romans 10:5-13 Those who believe that Jesus is both Lord and Savior will be saved.
Matthew 16:13-20 The truth upon which God builds his Church is Jesus, the Son of the living God.

“All are welcome!” Is that true at our church?❓ Or is church⛪️ meant only for people of the right heritage who behave the right way, “good church folk”? Is it conceivable that a stranger🚶‍♂️could walk into church unexpectedly and for some reason you would ask yourself, “What is someone like that doing here?” Or perhaps you ask that question about yourself.🪞”There seem to be godly people here. I’m not like them. Do I really belong?”⁉️

Today Jesus shows us that the Church is for all people.🌎 All of us—regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, or social status—have the same problem of sin. And we all have the same Savior. Anyone who comes to Christ’s Church and cries out “Lord, have mercy!” is welcome. 😇✝️

Please join us for worship ⛪️ tomorrow, Sunday, August 16th on this Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost,🔥✝️🌿 with the sermon from our sermon series, ‘Unexpected Truths’🤔😯😃✝️

✝️📖
Isaiah 56:1,6-8 The Lord told the world that all God-fearing people would have a place in the house of his Church.
Ephesians 2:13-22 Christ takes foreigners and strangers and builds them into a holy temple, his Church.
Matthew 15:21-28 In the face of a test from Jesus, a Canaanite woman demonstrates great faith in God’s promise for all people.

Unexpected Truths

The opening lines of the United States Declaration of Independence📜 boldly assert that certain truths are “self-evident”—truths accessible to human reason and widely recognized by observation👀 of the world. Among these are that all people are created equal🟰 and possess unalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.❤️ The founders appealed to principles they believed reasonable people could recognize simply by reflecting on human nature and justice.⚖️ These truths were meant to be obvious, clear to the mind, and persuasive in the public square.📣

Lutherans, however, note that the most important truths revealed in the Bible are not self-evident🤔 at all. In fact, they frequently appear surprising😲 or even contrary to human expectations. Scripture teaches that humanity is not naturally good but deeply sinful.😔 It declares that salvation cannot be achieved through human effort🏋️‍♂️ but comes entirely by God’s grace.🕊️ Most unexpected of all is the message that God brings forgiveness and eternal life through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. ✝️

Biblical truth is revealed by God rather than discovered by reason alone. While some truths may seem obvious to human judgment, the truths of the Bible are often unexpected.😯😃✝️

Christians Answer Doubt With Faith

Wherever faith✝️ clings to the promises of God, doubt🤔 is always lingering. Doubt asks the serpent’s garden question, “Did God really say?” People doubt God’s care,❤️ God’s promises,🌈✝️ or God’s providence.

The answer to doubt is not found in loud,💥📣 dramatic demonstrations. The true answer to doubt is found in the still small voice of our Savior God whispering to us in his Word.📖 Through Word and sacrament,🥖🍇 Christ reaches out to us with nail-scarred hands, proof of his great love. Jesus gently says, “Why did you doubt?”❓Our faith is restored. Christians answer doubt with faith.🕊️✝️

Please join us for worship ⛪️ tomorrow, Sunday, August 9th on this Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost,🔥✝️🌿 with the sermon from our sermon series, ‘What Makes Christians Different’❓✝️

✝️📖
1 Kings 19:9-18 The Lord answers Elijah’s doubt with the gentle whisper of a gracious promise.
Romans 8:28-39 In all times, good or bad, God carries out his perfect plan for his glory and our salvation.
Matthew 14:22-33 In the account of Peter walking on water, we see how quickly doubts arise, and how graciously Jesus answers them.

Christians Trust God to Provide

The hardest🏋️‍♂️ times to trust God are the times we need him most. It’s easier to trust God when your job is going great,🤩 your health🏥 is fine, your relationships❤️ are fine, and your family🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 is good. It’s easier to trust God when the sun☀️ is shining, but what happens when your life is suddenly overshadowed by dark😶‍🌫️ days?

When tragedy💔 strikes, we may wonder if God continues to care for us. At those times, Christians do not🚫 despair like those who have no hope. Instead, Christians focus on certain foundational🧱 facts. We are chosen and adopted as God’s dear children. ✝️ God provides us innumerable spiritual blessings and promises us an eternity of peace and joy. If we recognize those spiritual blessings, how can we doubt that God will give us everything we truly need at the right time? Christians trust God to provide.🕊️✝️

Please join us for worship ⛪️ tomorrow, Sunday, August 2nd on this Tenth Sunday after Pentecost,🔥✝️🌿 with the sermon from our sermon series, ‘What Makes Christians Different’❓✝️

✝️📖
1 Kings 17:1-6 In dark times with a wicked king, the Lord provided food for his faithful prophet.

Matthew 14:13-21 Jesus graciously provides for the needs of a great multitude

Are you grieving?

No matter what the circumstances, grief is a painful process. Our church has partnered with Grief Share to offer a 13-week grief and loss support group.

Grief Share is a safe, welcoming place where people understand the difficult emotions of grief. Over 13 weeks, you’ll find relief and comfort as you learn what to expect in the days ahead and how to navigate your personal grief process. Since there are no neat, orderly stages of grief, you’ll learn helpful ways of coping with grief, in all its unpredictability—and gain solid support each step of the way.

At a weekly Grief Share meeting, group participants will view a video featuring respected counselors, teachers, and healthcare professionals on grief-related topics. After that is a small-group discussion to allow people a time of sharing, support, and personal application of what they learned on the video.

Group participants will receive a book to take home filled with valuable exercises for navigating their personal grieving process.

Topics include how to manage grief-related emotions such as loneliness, anxiety, sadness, anger, and regret; how to cope with the changes in your life and relationships; how to recognize what’s normal in grief; and what to do if you feel stuck or hopeless.

Our next Grief Share grief support group is starting soon. Please join us weekly on Thursdays, from 1-3pm
September 10 - December 10, 2026

Living Word Lutheran Church
901 Ely Blvd S. Petaluma, CA 94954

Please share this information with anyone who is grieving a loved one’s death and may benefit from this 13-week program.

Christians Seek Spiritual Wealth

What do you consider your life’s top priorities?🏆 Many people start with family🏠 and friends👥. Financial💰 security and health🩻🩺 follow closely. Reputation😀 and recreation⛳️ make the cut. How about faith?✝️ Is it the top priority?🏆 What if other priorities must be sacrificed to keep faith the top priority?

The Bible📖 helps Christians keep worldly wealth💰 in perspective. It can buy the things of this world, things that rust and decay, but there is something more valuable. True wealth is spiritual wealth.✝️ It can be found only in God and his eternal blessings for us in Christ.

Please join us for worship ⛪️ tomorrow, Sunday, July 26th on this Ninth Sunday after Pentecost,🔥✝️🌿 with the sermon from our sermon series, ‘What Makes Christians Different’❓✝️
