Saturday, January 10, at Hope's Closet here at Principio Methodist Church, we had the honor to serve a local veteran in need. It was cold and rainy when he arrived on his bike. Only looking for a warm coat, he came in. After talking with him, we started helping him look for items in his size. We unfortunately had no coats in his size or bigger. One quick call was made to the pastor, a quick drive to pick up, and we had 4 coats for him to choose from. We even had a rain coat donated which he wore over his warm coat to stay dry. Gratitude was an understatement. He was so grateful. In fact, when asked if he could wait 10 minutes at the church with a few of the members, so that the items could be picked up, he hesitantly agreed as he didn't want to inconvenience anyone. We returned with the coats and a coffee pot and supplied him with some coffee. In talking with him, he mentioned that he love chocolate so we threw in some M&Ms we had from Sunday School. When offering him another coat, he politely declined saying that he only needed one but had a roommate that could use a coat. We loaded up his wagon with some necessities to stay warm, toiletries, shoes and some bedding items. When offering a tarp to keep items dry, he smiled and said, "You all are a blessing and I'll make sure to pay it forward." In listening to his Army stories we learned he has already paid it much forward. While he considered us a blessing, little does he know how much he blessed us during his time with us. This is a true example of how God;s words work through us.
The Hope Closet is open every Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm.
