Saturday, May 30

There is so much in these verses. Jesus teaching from the Old Testament (Moses, prophets, and Psalms would have been understood in that day to refer to the entire Old Testament.) The minds being opened so they could
understand. The explanation of the death, burial, and resurrection.

But don’t miss this part: “Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations,” (verse 47).

Paramount gives a lot of money to help people across the world. Some of that help is physical: sending food, helping dig wells, assisting medical teams in going to remote areas, etc. Some of the help is spiritual: everywhere a team goes with assistance, they also go with the Gospel.

Some probably think the first list is the important thing and the Gospel is a tag-along. They would have it backwards. The Gospel is the most important thing, but helping others shows the love of Christ. Once people see that love in action, they want to know more about our Master. Love God and love others. It’s a life plan.

Luke 24:44-49
(44) And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
(45) Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
(46) And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
(47) And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
(48) And ye are witnesses of these things.
(49) And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Friday, May 29

In verse 37 of today’s reading, the disciples don’t believe the resurrection because they’re terrified. In verse 41, they don’t believe because they’re joyful. It’s easy to mock the followers of Jesus, but I think I would be worse.

How many times have you known someone you thought was dead but theywalked into the room? My only story on that is when my mother passed away, very unexpectedly. A neighbor somehow got the completely wrong story and went to my in-laws’ home with food for the grieving family. She thought my father-in-law had passed away, and he opened the door when she knocked!

I can imagine something similar has happened many times, especially in the days of poor communication systems. (We still have poor communication, but we can’t blame it on the systems anymore.) But some of the followers had witnessed the crucifixion. Some of the followers had buried the body. Some had watched the tomb being sealed. They had prepared to anoint the body. This was not a miscommunication. This was a miracle.

Some may say, Well, other people were raised from the dead. Think of the miracles of Elijah and Elisha! Think of those Jesus raised from the dead! Yes. That’s true. But those people were raised only to eventually die again. They weren’t raised in a glorified body. And they weren’t the perfect sacrifice for our sins. They weren’t God walking among men.

The Bible says that Jesus is “the firstfruits of them that slept.” (1 Corinthians 15:20) I can’t explain exactly what is meant by that in the original Greek. I can believe that Jesus was resurrected in a special way that sets the example for the way we will be resurrected one day. That’s enough for me.

Luke 24:37-43
(37) But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
(38) And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
(39) Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
(40) And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
(41) And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
(42) And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
(43) And he took it, and did eat before them.

Thursday, May 28

From Matthew 5:9 when Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers,” until John 20:26 when He appears to the apostles after His resurrection and says, “Peace be unto you,” throughout the Gospels, Jesus encourages us to have peace.

Sometimes we think peace means a lack of trouble, smooth sailing, everything going like we want it to, or even worldly things like plenty of money. But in John 14:27, Jesus tells the apostles at the Last Supper, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.” You probably know what happened later that evening. Judas committed the worst betrayal in the history of the world, Jesus was arrested, Peter denied knowing Him, and the other apostles were scattered.

Peace did not mean worldly people would suddenly all start acting like Christians. Most of us are grateful when our church members or our immediate family act like Christians! Peace is found in our hearts in the midst of trouble, not in the world around us.

Peace be with you!

Luke 24:36
(36) And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

Wednesday, May 27

I have read that the people who lived during New Testament times would not have been likely to believe the testimony of women, which is one evidence that this entire story was not fabricated. If you make up a story, you use authoritative figures as witnesses. You don’t use women in a day when few would believe women.

I think it’s cool that God chose women to be the first witnesses to the resurrection, regardless of His reason. Many today believe the Bible puts women into a position of inferiority. It does not. It is simply that the world today doesn’t recognize the honor God bestows on women. We think the person who earns the most money or wields the most power is the most important. But seriously, in your life, who made more of an impact? That professional ball player you practically (I hope not actually) idolized, or your mother? The president of the United States or your Sunday School teacher? You can probably think of many other examples.

In the story of the two followers of Jesus on the road to Emmaus, only Cleopas is named. Many assume the other follower was a male friend or relative to Cleopas, while some Bible scholars believe it was his wife. But that’s not important. I mention it in case someone wonders why I overlooked it. If the identity of the second follower were important, God would have told us. As it is, we can speculate. Or we can immerse ourselves in the obvious meaning of Scripture.

My problem is that I am like the ones Jesus was talking to when He said, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:” (verse 25). Instead of wondering about things that aren’t clear in Scripture, I would do better to “believe all that the prophets have spoken.”

Luke 24:13-35
(13) And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
(14) And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
(15) And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
(16) But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
(17) And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
(18) And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
(19) And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
(20) And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
(21) But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
(22) Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
(23) And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
(24) And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
(25) Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
(26) Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
(27) And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
(28) And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
(29) But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
(30) And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
(31) And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
(32) And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
(33) And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
(34) Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
(35) And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

Tuesday, May 26

The angels reminded the women of some of the teaching they have either not remembered or misunderstood. When I was a teacher, I sometimes wondered whether Jesus got as frustrated as I did when a student either asked a question or made a statement that made it obvious that they had not been listening.

Of course, Jesus had divine patience, and He needed it! The women did go tell the apostles what they had seen and heard, however. Have you ever had someone tell a story, and you really wanted to call them a liar? You just cannot believe that what they told really happened. The apostles may have felt the same way.

It is interesting that the chief priests and Pharisees remembered that Jesus had promised to rise again after three days, but the apostles seemingly forgot! (Matthew 27:62-66)

Read John 20:2-10 for the account of “the other disciple, whom Jesus loved” going with Peter to the tomb that fateful morning. At least the two of them did go look for themselves instead of simply ignoring the women. But they would all soon see evidence that would open their eyes.

Luke 24:4-12
(4) And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
(5) And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
(6) He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
(7) Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
(8) And they remembered his words,
(9) And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
(10) It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
(11) And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
(12) Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

Monday, May 25

My apologies! I've had internet problems all day, so this is late.

Today is Memorial Day, the day the United States of America pauses to remember those who have given their lives in defense of our country. We remember these women and men with respect and honor, and give our thanks to the family members who still mourn their loss.

In our Bible reading for today, there was a very different mourning. The true followers of Jesus had spent the time from the crucifixion until the end of the Sabbath in agony. Disbelief and anger probably warred with unabated grief. The loss was more than the loss of a friend and companion, more than the loss of a religious leader and teacher. This was the loss of hope. With Jesus dead, His message, His ministry, seemed unfulfilled.

The followers had heard the teaching of Jesus about His sacrifice, but they had not comprehended. When the women find the stone rolled away and no body inside the tomb, they must have been horrified. They were not immediately jubilant, we know. They did not immediately say, Oh, yeah, I remember what Jesus said about this... No, they were just as devastated as any of us would be if we went to the burial site of a loved one and found it violated.

But hope was alive and breathing. They simply had to see Him again, walking among them, and accept that His teaching was coming true in front of them.

Luke 24:1-3
(1) Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
(2) And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
(3) And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

Sunday, May 24

Joseph of Arimathaea (and Nicodemus, who is mentioned in some of the parallel accounts of this story) are examples of why we shouldn’t consider all Jews cursed. They are doing what they can to give Jesus one last honor by burying His body in the proper manner. Most of us have done the same for a loved one. It’s expensive, time-consuming, heartbreaking, and feels so final to plan a burial for someone you love.

And yet, these men may have seen the risen Savior. How awesome would that be? Certainly, they talked to people who had seen Jesus.

I’ve read that, in those days, the bodies of the crucified were tossed in garbage dumps. That’s sad for anyone. That is still someone’s child, regardless of the crimes. But Nicodemus and Joseph made sure that the body of Jesus was handled differently. We can never do enough to show our love for Jesus, but I’m sure these men were glad they did what they could.

Their actions also make the resurrection more obvious. A sealed tomb, a stone rolled away, the cloth left behind… He arose, y’all! And that’s not just a story for Resurrection Sunday!

Luke 23: 50-54
(50) And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:
(51) (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
(52) This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
(53) And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
(54) And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
(55) And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
(56) And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

Saturday, May 23

There are many people in the world who make a point of giving what they consider to be reasonable, scientific explanations for Biblical miracles. So you may have heard that this event was simply an eclipse. Hmmm… have you ever experienced a total eclipse? We had a partial in 2024, but the last total eclipse in South MS was well over a century ago. So, no, I wasn’t here for that, despite the fact that my children pretend I walked with dinosaurs!

But here’s the thing. A total eclipse only lasts one to three minutes, with a theoretical maximum of 7.5 minutes. (Yes, I had to look that up.) While the entire eclipse event may last 2-3 hours, that isn’t the total darkness these verses talk about. So next time someone tells you it was an eclipse, ask if they believe that there was darkness for 3 solid hours. And then explain. People who fight against the Bible use the scripture itself for their supporting points. Scripture telling about events they don’t believe happened. I’m not saying to get in an argument, but I am saying to stand firm on your faith in the Bible, even if you don’t have a ready answer for those who would dismiss the truth.

Luke 23: 44-49
(44) And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
(45) And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
(46) And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
(47) Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
(48) And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.
(49) And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
