What is a Reader Service?

A Reader Service is an Orthodox service held when a priest is unavailable. The prayers, Psalms, Scripture, and hymns of the Church continue, while the parts of the service reserved for a priest are omitted.

Why are Reader Services important?

The Church does not stop praying when a priest cannot be present. Reader Services allow the parish to gather, keep the appointed services, and continue our common life of prayer.

Who leads a Reader Service?

Reader Services are typically led by a Reader or another layperson appointed to do so with the blessing of the priest. They do not take the place of a priest or the Divine Liturgy, but lead the congregation through the prayers appointed for the service.

MICHIGAN CITY, IN — St. George the Great Martyr Orthodox Church in Michigan City, Indiana, marked the 115th anniversary of the laying of its cornerstone with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy led by Bp. Spyridon, the new bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia's (ROCOR) Chicago and Mid-America Diocese. The cornerstone was laid on August 15/28, 1911, with the blessing of St. Raphael Hawaweeny, Bishop of Brooklyn, who served under St. Tikhon, Archbishop of North America.

Sept 12 & 13 - Readers Services (Readers Vespers & Typika)

Sept 26 & 27 - Vespers / Divine Liturgy served by Fr. Raphael Tadros

Please note in order to take communion you must be an Orthodox Christian of a canonical jurisdiction, as well as take confession with Fr. Raphael unless other arrangements have been made.
