We remember

This morning Bishop Lou offered the invocation at the Peoria Riverfront Museum 9/11 memorial. We remember everyone who lost their lives in these tragic events, and we pray for peace and healing in our world.

Each year, our Jewish brothers and sisters mark Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish New Year and the start of a sacred period leading to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. These High Holy Days are a time for prayer, self-examination, seeking forgiveness, and returning to God, as Jewish communities look toward the year ahead with hope.

In this time, we are reminded of the rich tradition of Jewish and Christian engagement with the Scriptures we share.

For generations, Jewish and Christian scholars have learned from one another through the study of the Bible, deepening our understanding not only of Scripture, but also of the traditions and communities that have received it.

This kind of fruitful collaboration is one of the many ways that the vision of Nostra Aetate continues to take shape: through friendship, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to seeking greater understanding.

As we enter the Jewish New Year, we wish our Jewish friends a year of peace, blessing, and renewed hope. Shana Tova!

We are so excited to be able to celebrate a Divine Liturgy with the Most Reverend Bishop Pipta in honor of Fulton Sheen. We are blessed to be able to share in this part of Sheen's life and ministry, as he desired for the Church to become united and whole.

As part of the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s beatification festivities, Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with Bishop Robert is to be celebrated on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria, Illinois. Everyone is warmly invited!

This celebration will also feature the unveiling of a new commemorative icon of Blessed Fulton Sheen, written by Fr. Tom Loya, which will appear both at the Liturgy and on the cover of the service books prepared for the occasion.

The icon highlights Sheen’s unique place in the life of the Church:

*Two bishop’s mitres frame the image, representing the two liturgical traditions of the Catholic Church in which he served-Latin and Byzantine.

*At the center is Sheen’s familiar “magic blackboard,” recalling his groundbreaking media ministry and his gift for teaching the faith to millions through radio and television.

*The verse inscribed on the blackboard reflects one of his well‑known spiritual insights, and the icon includes his signature JMJ—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—which he wrote at the start of every televised lesson.

Together, the Divine Liturgy and the new icon invite the faithful to rejoice in Blessed Fulton Sheen’s legacy of evangelization, his love for the Christian East, and his enduring witness to Christ.

Today, on the 25th anniversary, we pray for and remember the lives lost during the September 11th, 2001 attacks. We give thanks for the selfless courage of the first responders, and ordinary citizens who rushed in toward danger to help their fellow man. We pray for ongoing healing, compassion, and comfort to all those affected emotionally, physically, and spiritually by the 9/11 attacks. We also continue to pray for peace in our world.
