Dungeons & Dragons has a complicated history within the church. There was a time when many congregations fell into fear, misinformation, and propaganda directed at an imaginative game, a game played with pencil, paper, and dice, where people embody fictional characters in a fictional world.
It was demonized and accused of being a gateway for the devil to enter homes and lives. Preachers even proclaimed this from the pulpit as though it were biblical truth.
Yet in my experience, few activities have allowed me to connect with people more deeply than this cooperative storytelling game.
The true spirit of the game is that a group of heroes join forces to drive back evil with goodness. It fosters fellowship, teamwork, and overcoming differences to save an imaginary world together.
In my own life, this game has only ever drawn me closer to my brothers and sisters in Christ and opened doors to build relationships with people who feel far from God.
It grieves me when Christians take their personal convictions or misunderstandings of unfamiliar things and impose them onto others. So many hearts were pushed away from God by those who claimed to speak truth when, in reality, they were simply enforcing personal behavioral preferences and often, don't read the Bible for themselves.
And because of that, countless people who might have found community in the church never did.
I’m genuinely grateful for a church that embraces nerd culture and has been hosting Dungeons & Dragons every other Friday. It’s been incredible to see this community grow: six Dungeon Masters, twenty-five players, and plenty of room for more.
If you’re looking for a place to have fun, play some games, and be a part of a loving community, come join us this Friday, December 5th at 6:30 PM.
Church is community. Come be part of one.
