As we are getting ready to finish up Hebrews I've been thinking about application. If Christ is truly as incredible and central to everything as Hebrews says it is, how should we respond?
Last Sunday I encouraged the church to abandon mediocrity in our walk with Christ. Since this is the season of New Year resolutions, I would encourage you to prayerfully consider each of these.
Make a commitment to pray for a straight 10 minutes once a day. If we count up our time spent in prayer throughout the day it would probably add up to 10+ minutes..possibly. Set a time aside to not move, check your phone, or be distracted by anything else until you have prayed for at least 10 minutes straight. This is probably a bit intimidating, but there are some great tools out there. One is a basic prayer list that you keep yourself. Update it daily, be specific. Also, there are several books out there on praying through Scripture. I would highly recommend Donald Whitney's "Pray Through the Bible."
Commit to mastering one book of the Bible this year. By "master" I mean that you have read through the book so much that you know the basic content, and the flow of the narrative/argument, and you can even quote chunks of it. This would mean reading and thinking about it over and over again.
I am all for reading through Scripture and I would not want to discourage you from any current plan you have but you can do both. While reading Scripture is beneficial, it is even better to marinate in it. Our goal is to find ourselves alluding to the Bible almost unconsciously because we have considered it so much.
Pursue evangelism. Make a solid goal as to how many times you will give the Gospel. You can make it weekly or monthly but regardless pursue it. By pursuing it I mean praying for opportunities and boldness. Pray that you will be dissatisfied unless you do talk about Christ. Think about how powerful it would be to have our church body teach and explain the Gospel over and over again in the Peoria area.
Understand that I am not trying to create boxes for us to check off. You know that I am not a fan of moralism, but I also know that if you aim at nothing that is exactly what you will hit. While these are not magic bullets, if you pursue these goals depending on God for grace and self-control, there will be real growth.
May God glorify Himself in our lives in this coming year.
