“For what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:14b KJV)
“Precious in the sight of the LORD [is] the death of his saints.” (Psalm 116:15 KJV)
It can be hard to cope with grief and loss. Some are never able to overcome the crippling weight that comes with an unexpected death. But everyone has to face the uncomfortable truth that, whether expected or not, life will end – and it will end sooner for many than they hoped or planned. According to God’s Word, death is inevitable and is followed by a reckoning with the Creator. “. . . it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: . .” (Hebrews 9:27 KJV)
Charlie Kirk had lived his life in preparation for his meeting with God. Jesus said, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: . .” (Matthew 6:19-20 KJV) Charlie did not know the day that he would die, or that it would be while he was still so young, but he lived life like he didn’t have much time and he had a lot to do! To many people, his focus seemed to be on politics. It seemed like he was pushing a right-wing conservative narrative. He may have been doing so, but it was because he believed Heaven would be pleased by the treasure he was laying up through his labors. He fought for the unborn. He reminded people that America is and always has been a Christian nation. He stood up for objective truth in the face of subjective opinions that strove to undermine it. He contended for the faith – not just for right-wing politics! He shared the truth of the Gospel boldly, repeatedly, and unashamedly!
When His Savior welcomed him into glory, he didn’t regret his service for God. He knew he wasn’t earning his salvation – Jesus paid for that in full! He was just fulfilling the commitment that he made to God in 5th grade to serve Him with his life, because He was worthy!
Those left behind, though. . . Many were left with questions. Why did God allow this? How could He let him be killed in the prime of his life? Though no audible answer was forthcoming from Heaven, messages were coming in from all over America: “Charlie’s death changed my life.” Perhaps each did not contain those exact words, but the evidence was clear. God did what He does best: He took a tragedy and turned it into a trophy of His grace!
1. New Chapters
Turning Point USA was Charlie’s life work. He built a movement from the ground up, with chapters established in high schools and colleges across the country - chapters focused on influencing young people with traditional conservative Christian values.
Charlie’s death acted like a lightning rod for this movement, with 54,000 requests to join or start a new chapter within less than a week of his passing!
These chapters were a physical representation of what was happening in many lives. For many, the death of Charlie Kirk started a new chapter in their lives. The sudden resolve, boldness, and utterance that so many found in his death were marks of this new chapter.
Many times, life is that way: marked by chapters. Often significant life events are the impetus. Though this one came suddenly and, for many, meant significant change, it was welcomed. It was as though the nation was reproved and offered the opportunity to do better. Though often reproof can lead to resentment, this reproof was from the life of a man that was gone. This made it easier. People wanted to do better. They wanted to change to be more like they should be and less like they had been. What is so unusual is that this new chapter didn’t begin with a change of location, a new job, or a new relationship. No, this one came when the world saw a wholesome, hard-working, and God-fearing young man have his life stolen from him. It came when this man that poured his life into serving his God and country was yanked out of that role unexpectedly. How could anyone continue on like before? The new requirement people felt inside - to let this event change them - was as unexpected as his passing. Change is often feared or avoided because it can be hard, take work, and represent the unknown. Change is what Charlie wanted in America, and many people knew they needed it, but had previously hidden from it. His death offered it in a way that was surprisingly easy and suddenly acceptable. Making America Great Again couldn’t come from “more of the same.” What Charlie had lived and wanted became the new chapter for countless people – perhaps even for America.
2. Emotionally
“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” (Psalm 126:5-6 KJV)
Certainly, many emotions were experienced as a result of this assassination – but perhaps the greatest emotions were the ones that brought tears!
A common theme of many that commented about Mr. Kirk’s death was how surprised they were at the emotions his death brought. Emotions are natural responses that are sometimes uncontrollable. Like with change, people often hide from emotions. They are suppressed. People don’t like to be mocked, and emotions are an easy target for people looking to do the mocking. Emotions are important though. They are a part of our humanity. After his death, Charlie was attacked for saying he didn’t believe in empathy. The statement was taken out of its context, because he had followed it up with his belief in sympathy as a better description of the emotions being discussed. Regardless of the semantics at play, Charlie did support, agree with, and believe in the emotion brought about by the pain or hardships of others. This same sympathy (along with anger, frustration, sadness, and disbelief) was probably one of the many emotions that caused tears in the days following his death.
According to God’s Word, tears are important – valuable at times. God records our tears (Psalm 56:8) and blesses them when they water good seeds. Though strong emotions are expected for a spouse, friends, and loved ones at an untimely death, they are not expected for the masses. Emotions can unify even the most divided groups, when experienced and understood together. Some of Charlie’s fiercest opponents wept at the news of his death. Yes, some mocked and jeered, but others responded with a more human response. They respected his work and grieved for his wife and children.
How much will these emotions Make America Great Again? As much as they push a nation to continue to love and respect those with differing views and continue to encourage dialogue and understanding rather than violence. Though there are many whose emotions went unscathed through this, there were perhaps more that were taken aback by just how affected they were. As long as there can be tears there can be hope!
3. Spiritually
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: . .” (1 Peter 3:15 KJV)
Will America see great revival? Can a country so divided find unity? Will the next generations of Americans have the same freedoms of past generations? These questions were ones that Charlie cared about – and he knew they all had their answer in one Person – and it wasn’t Charlie Kirk! He knew Jesus was the only answer to America’s problems, that He was the only Way to Heaven (John 14:6), and that He was America’s only Hope! Charlie knew the Answer personally and pointed to Him often!
Charlie could see the spiritual temperature in America changing, and he was doing his part to effect that change. He knew that God was doing a supernatural work. He saw that Roe vs. Wade was overturned in his lifetime. He knew that gay marriage was scheduled to be reviewed by the US Supreme Court. He saw the vision that God gave him - the Turning Point USA movement - gaining traction and sweeping away godless ideologies as it carried Biblical truth throughout the country.
What Charlie didn’t get to see was the spiritual fervor that was ignited at his death. His focus on God – sharing Him, serving Him, and honoring Him - became the focus of many wishing to honor his legacy and take up his mantle. If the spiritual commitment of one man could have so much impact, how much more impact can thousands or millions have if their spiritual commitments stand? God only knows the future, but He orchestrated the events of the past and present, and he certainly had a plan in place before this happened! It is reasonable to believe that He allowed it knowing the many spiritual decisions that would come from it and the massive weight of their potential if they are carried out!

The message that Charlie Kirk wanted shared the most was the message of forgiveness of sins and eternal life that is available in Jesus alone! This message, called the Gospel (which means “good news”), is clearly laid out at the link below. Please read it and share it with others!
