Lesson Recap

The Bread of Life
Sis. Crystal Knight
(Luke 22:19-20)

“Does this offend you?”
Jesus was speaking a hard saying. Not everyone could accept what He was teaching because following Him requires more than enjoying the benefits, it requires surrender.

John 6:51
Jesus declared that He is the Bread of Life.
* He is our daily bread.
* We must consume Jesus daily.
* We should continually ask:
* “God, what do You want?”
* “God, what pleases You?”

Bread was central to Jewish life, and Jesus used that imagery to show that He must be central in ours.

Jesus IS our source and our sustenance.

But just as there is the Bread of Life, there is also the Cup of Suffering.
Education cannot sustain us.
Family cannot sustain us.
Jobs cannot sustain us.
Only Jesus can truly sustain us.

The cup could only be established through Calvary.
Christ was our example in suffering.
He willingly endured the pain.
In prayer, Jesus acknowledged His struggle.
It was prayer that helped Him surrender to the will of God.

Living for God does not mean living trouble-free.

“That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings...”
We will all have to drink from the cup of suffering.
The Potter knows the clay.
God understands what He is shaping and forming in us.

1 Peter 4:12-13
Jesus is not looking for fair-weather friends.
He wants friends who will stay when things get hard.
Praise Him when the thorn has not been removed.
Praise Him when prayer has not yet changed the situation.

2 Corinthians 12:7-9
Pain is often our greatest teacher.
Yet many times we try to avoid pain through:
* Social media
* Food
* Sleeping
* Pleasing others
* Control

James 1:4
“But let patience have her perfect work."
Suffering forms us.
Patience develops us.
God uses trials to mature us.

Are we here just for the bread, or are we willing to drink the cup?

Sometimes God is calling us to examine ourselves instead of everyone else.

Are we worshipping in this hard season?
Are we enduring hardness as a good soldier?
Are we obeying even when it hurts?

Even when there is a thorn, we can trust that God is working all things for our good.

A pearl is formed through irritation, pain, and pressure.
Suffering is part of God's plan.
God often produces beauty through adversity.

We cannot become so focused on the suffering that we miss the promise right in front of us.

1 Peter 5:10
“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you."
After the suffering comes:
Perfecting
Establishing
Strengthening
Settling
