Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. KJV
When the Apostle says here that "sin shall have no dominion over you... "
He is not referring to the types of sin, such as addictions (whether it be alcohol, ni****ne, narcotics, food, fornication, etc) he is referring to the sin nature, the old Adamic Nature.
For far too long the church as a whole, across denominational lines, has taught, including among Pentecost, that believers once saved should begin to act differently.
Regardless of the denominations, we give believers the "Checklist" of does and don'ts. Do Come to Church, Do be faithful, Do pay your tithe, Do read your bible. Don't have an affair with another persons spouse (I believe we still have this don't among most denominations although we have and make allowances for peoples return after they do)
What I am saying, ladies and gentlemen, is that we have constructed laws, guide posts, and guard rails, to attempt to keep people in "the way".
Sadly, what we haven't adequately done is teach people the answer.
The answer to maintaining a life in Christ is not the checklist of do's and dont's, but it is in actuality a death.
Even in Pentecost we have traded this for the baptism or enduement of power in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
When I was a kid growing up in Pentecost, 30 years ago, it was then called being sanctified. Where we treated sanctification as this one time occurrence where the old man was dealt with; which is not altogether wrong
However, sanctification was a specific time, but no one knew what that was except when the saint of God laid a carton of ci******es on the altar, or the sister stopped wearing this or that.
However, we saw that even with the outward exclusions the inward grace seem to still fall short and people were still falling victim to their flesh, and old nature ot habits.
Then when they make their return to church then we would say that they got saved again, which is like saying being born again, again... :/
Today we have changed and now say, Once a person is filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, then they will have power over sin.
(Not completely wrong. Yet at the same time it takes away from the work at Calvary)
The reality is, ladies and gentleman, our carnal condition was dealt with at Calvary, and when we are saved or Born Again the Father and the Son enter into our lives through the Holy Ghost.
This is why Paul would say in another place, "Know you not that you are the Temple of the Holy Ghost..."
This is for every Born Again believer. The Holy Ghost was first given to minister to us the grace and comfort to us in Salvation. This is exactly why Jesus said that it is expedient that he go away so that the Comforter would come.
Secondly, he fills us with the evidential working of His power with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance, and that is done to make us effectual for service, and we become witnesses.
This is the baptism of fire, set forth from the beginning, that empowers believers to do the work of Christ and to demonstrate his holiness power to the world through miracles and great working of powers.
However the cross is the effectual working of our supply for salvation and deliverance from the power and bo***ge of sin. It is only through the cross where flesh is put to death and from an empty tomb Christ arises in our hearts with the new life of the Spirit insomuch that the old nature is put to death and the we no longer walk in the flesh to fulfill the lusts thereof, but we live in the Spirit fulfilling the will of Christ in the new life.
Be blessed
