I’ve been thinking about Mary today.
Watching her son suffer, unable to do anything about it.
Unable to save Him.
Feeling helpless and hopeless.
And I can’t help but wonder…
how could that Friday ever be called “good”?
Because if I’m honest…
I would have saved my son, Hunter, if I could.
I would have changed the outcome.
I would have done anything to keep him here.
And maybe Mary felt that too.
But she knew something more, that I have to keep reminding myself of…
She knew Jesus.
She knew WHO HE was.
Not just her son, but the Savior of the world.
And somehow, in the middle of unimaginable pain…she trusted Him. She believed Him.
Even so…Good Friday didn’t feel “good”.
It felt like devastating loss.
Heartbreak.
But what Mary couldn’t see yet…was that Sunday was coming.
And that’s what I hold onto.
Because without the cross…
there is no resurrection.
Without Good Friday…
there is no Easter Sunday.
Without Jesus…
there is no hope.
No hope of eternity.
No hope of heaven.
No hope of seeing Hunter again.
No hope for today.
So today, even as I think about Mary’s sorrow…
I remember:
God was working.
Even then.
Even there.
And Sunday did come.
And the tomb was empty.
And Jesus is alive!
And because of this GOOD NEWS…
I always have hope in this life and the life to come.
