Led Zeppelin wasn't the first one to dream about a stairway to heaven.

A runaway con man beat them to it by about 3,700 years.

His name is Jacob, and in Genesis 28 he's not doing well. He just tricked his brother out of both his birthright and his blessing, and now that brother wants him dead, so he runs.

He has nothing. Just a rock for a headrest, alone in a nowhere town.

That's when God shows up. Not because Jacob earned it, because that's who God is.

The passage is really four truths about Jacob that turn out to be just as true of us. You can be completely alone and still never be alone, you get treated far better than you deserve, you're never outside God's presence even when you're unaware of it, and you are very much a work in progress.

Nobody comes out looking good in Genesis 27…

Not Isaac. Not Rebekah. Not Jacob. Not Esau.

Isaac is fizzling out like a sparkler on the Fourth of July, so preoccupied with tasty food that it's mentioned six times in the passage. He knows what God declared before his sons were ever born, that the older will serve the younger, and he acts as if obedience to the word of God is optional anyway.

Rebecca overhears his plan and hatches a scheme. Jacob lies to his blind father three times. Esau, furious at losing the blessing, vows to kill his brother the moment their father dies.

Not a single person in this story demonstrates a loyal love for the Lord.

And yet God uses every bit of it.

Here's the big idea of the whole passage, God has an invincible determination to be faithful to his word, despite the unfaithfulness of his people. Rebekah and Jacob didn't need to scheme and deceive to get what God had already promised. The collusion wasn't necessary. God had already spoken. They just didn't trust him enough to wait on him.

Underneath every scripture passage are two divine questions. Do you trust me? Will you obey me? By their actions, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Esau all said no.

There are three principles of a life worth living. Live for the right one all your days, listen to the right one in all your ways, and love the right one and simply obey.

The only way to live a life worth living is with Jesus. Jesus and only Jesus makes your life worth living.

Stop for just a moment and look up.

That sky you are watching right now… every color, every cloud, every last ray of light fading beneath the horizon is not accidental. It is not random. It is a declaration.

God is not silent.

He has been speaking since the very first moment of creation, and He is still speaking tonight through the canvas stretched out above you.

You don’t always need a sermon or a sanctuary to encounter the glory of God. Sometimes all you need is the willingness to stop, look up, and listen to what the skies have been proclaiming all along.

He made all of this. And He made you.

Jesus didn't have to touch him. He chose to.

In all of the Old Testament, 39 books, there are only two recorded cases of someone being healed of leprosy. Two. In each case, it was God alone who did the healing.

So when this unnamed man with leprosy broke every social and religious rule, pushed past the crowd, fell on his knees in front of Jesus, and begged "if you are willing, you can make me clean" Jesus reached out and touched him.

He didn't have to. He'd already stopped a storm from a boat without touching the water. He'd already healed a servant miles away without being in the same city. He could have just said the word.

But Jesus reached out his hand and touched a man that no one had touched in years. Possibly decades.

Why? Because Jesus wasn't afraid of getting what that man had. He was confident he was going to give him what he had.

The Greek translation of this passage tells that his guts shook. A deep involuntary stirring at the core of his being. Filled with compassion and righteous indignation at once. And he reached out.

In Mark 1 we land on what happens at the intersection of human suffering and spectacular faith. Jesus is moved to action. And the swap of salvation that took place at Calvary is the same story told here.

We give him our sin. He gives us his salvation. He touches us. We are cleansed from the inside out.

And then the man went out and couldn't stop talking.

Don't let anyone silence you either.
