Today's Sermon. 📖 It Is Written
How much of what we believe comes from Scripture—and how much comes from culture, tradition, movies, artwork, or assumptions?
In today's message, we explored how easy it is for ideas to become accepted as "Bible truth" without actually being found in the Bible. Was the forbidden fruit an apple? Were there only three wise men? Do angels always have wings? Does God promise to never give us more than we can handle?
Many of the pictures we carry in our minds have been shaped by culture rather than Scripture itself.
That is why Jesus repeatedly pointed people back to God's Word. When He faced temptation, His response was simple: "It is written." When others misunderstood God's purpose, Jesus said, "You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures." (Matthew 22:29)
Jesus showed us that faith is not built on assumptions, traditions, or even what a teacher says. It is built on knowing and understanding God's Word for ourselves. We should always test what we hear—even from the pulpit—against Scripture.
We also discussed how to approach the Old Testament. Some passages can be difficult to understand, but Jesus provides the key. He taught that the Scriptures ultimately point to Him (John 5:39). The life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus help us understand God's purpose throughout the entire Bible.
God was working through real, flawed people, moving history toward His ultimate plan in Christ. When we read Scripture through the lens of Jesus, difficult passages begin to make more sense, and God's character becomes clearer.
If you missed today's message, we invite you to watch the sermon and join us throughout the week for our Beyond Sunday reflections. Together we'll continue exploring how God's Word shapes our understanding, challenges our assumptions, and transforms our lives.
Question for the week:
What beliefs or assumptions have you accepted without ever asking, "Is that actually what Scripture says?"
