Sister Poulter and Sister Jadyn Reber
Becoming Better Disciples of Christ
The sisters chose chapter 6 of preach my gospel for their devotional. The reason they chose this is because sometimes in teaching others and focusing on their progression on coming closer to Christ and developing Christlike attributes… we forget to focus on ourselves and how we are becoming more Christlike and developing His attributes. We can continually become better people ourselves.
In Preach My Gospel the focus on what you need to do as a missionary ‘…how to study, how to teach, how to manage time wisely. Just as vital as what you do, however, is who you are and who you are becoming. This is part of what it means to endure to the end through increasing your faith in Christ, continuing regularly to repent of your sins by relying upon Christ, renewing your covenants with the Father and the Son through partaking of the sacrament regularly, and following the promptings of the Holy Ghost in all things.’ PMG Chapter 6
They talked about how we can develop these ‘spiritual gifts’. The sisters gave five steps to help us strengthen these Spiritual Gifts:
1. Faith. In order to accomplish anything you have to have faith in it. A belief that you can do it.
2. Pray. Ask for it continuously in prayer.
3. Work for it. Heavenly Father loves effort.
4. Be worthy of it. We need to have the Spirit in order to come closer to Christ.
5. Remember why you are seeking these gifts: to love God and to love the people you are teaching.
They invited us to remember why we are here and to choose a Christlike attribute that we could work on and to use these five steps to help develop it in our own lives. The promise is that we will draw closer to Christ as we strive to become more like Him and we will become better disciples of Christ.

MISSIONS ARE WORTH IT!
Sister Naylor and Sister Simpkins

As the sisters were trying to prepare for this devotional they had some ideas bouncing around in their heads. When they heard Elder Christofferson speak about what ‘they had been thinking about’ for this devotional… they knew they were on the right path!

SS: ‘I've been thinking about the different emotions that I've had while out on my mission:
Joyful ~ Ecstatic ~ Proud of myself ~Happy ~ Tired ~ Disappointed ~ Kind of annoyed ~ A little nervous ~ A little hungry … sometimes all in the span of two hours!

We speak with so many different people with so many different circumstances … We hear of things that are going on and happening back at home … then there are changes in the weather, right now is it raining? There are all kinds of different emotions that we feel out here on a mission. As missionaries there are so many different circumstances going on that one's emotions can be all over the place! As missionaries we are definitely not alone when feeling these emotions!

SS: ‘Sometimes I wake up so happy and so hopeful and I'm gonna go out and I'm gonna baptize every single person that I meet… then other days I go AGHHH! I don't even know why I'm here! MISSIONS ARE HARD!!! REALLY HARD!!!
…BUT SO SO WORTH IT! So if you are in that boat and you are feeling these emotions… That's what we are going to talk about today!’

SN: ‘are missionaries worth it? When I was in training I would have said ‘absolutely not’! It's definitely hard… but it is SO WORTH IT! Whenever I get the chance to speak with my Dad… he tells me how ‘worth it’ it has been for him. He gets to go back and look at his mission and sees how ‘worth it’ it has been for him.

I definitely have had moments of disappointment and discouragement. While in training we were teaching a family. They were so interested! Then after a couple of months… they dropped us! When that happened I wanted to go home.

The most beautiful thing about this mission… Is that we are also here to learn. No efforts are wasted! We need to get up when we fall. I could've chosen to go home… but I stayed. It has been so worth it and I am so glad that I stayed!

SS: I think sometimes it's hard to get back up… especially when things are not going right.

I remember one time we had a baptism. We had everything set up for the baptism… and the person didn't show up for the baptism. I was deflated! Not as deflated as my companion… but I was deflated! I thought ‘this is what was supposed to happen… why did this not happen? This is supposed to be God’ plan… why is this not working?’

Sometimes in those moments when things are not working out the way we hoped they would work out we need to humble ourselves. We need to think about God's plan and what His timing is… and how it is SO PERFECT!

“When the focus of our lives is on God’s plan of salvation … and Jesus Christ and His gospel, we can feel joy regardless of what is happening—or not happening—in our lives. Joy comes from and because of Him. He is the source of all joy. …”
~ President Russell M. Nelson
I know that when we feel deflated. When things aren't working out… and when things aren't working out the way that we want ~ it's hard to feel that joy sometimes. That's not what God wants. He wants us to feel that joy. When we don't feel that joy… Those feelings are from the adversary. We need to move past that.

In Preach My Gospel… in the very first chapter: My Purpose… in one of the sections ‘Being a Successful Missionary’… I like to read that section alot because it speaks of having joy on your mission…
‘You should not, however, become discouraged; discouragement will weaken your faith. If you lower your expectations, your effectiveness will decrease, your desire will weaken, and you will have greater difficulty following the Spirit.’…

We are not here to have our faith weaken’d we are here to have our faith strengthened. We just need to move past that those feelings of discouragement.

SN: With all this talk about joy… how do I feel joy?

SS: Great question… I love to feel joy. One way you feel joy is through service. I love to do service! One of my favorite Christlike attributes is Charity. I love charity. Anyone in my districts can attest to that. I love the topic of it. Charity is something I'm always working towards. In order to have charity you need to feel joy. And you want others to feel that that charity that joy.

SN: Some of the best moments of my mission have been in service some of the craziest in some of the happiest!

Another one is repentance. I know that when I daily repent and also when I'm repenting at church it makes me feel so much better.'

In Psalms 27:14 it says:
“Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”

Sister Naylor and Sister Simpkins spoke of different ways we can create JOY in ourselves…
We need to be Optimistic… Grateful… Cheerful… Serve others. These are just some ways we can feel joy and we can teach others of that joy! Not just fleeting joy but that lasting joy that comes from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Missions are hard… But we need to remember why we are here and who we are serving because missions are definitely WORTH IT!

The Doctrine of Christ ~ The Book of Mormon

President & Sister Needs

PN: We are excited to be here! This is the culmination of a lot of work! 90 days of us focusing on reading the Book of Mormon every day and to search and find the ‘doctrine of Christ’ and the ‘faith to do miracles’ that are contained within the Book of Mormon. I know for me it's been a great experience and it's given me a completely different perspective of the Book of Mormon as I've read through with that single focus. It also was compelling ~ the fact that you can find the doctrine of Christ and those miracles everywhere. You do not have to search… compare that to the Bible it is clear that the Book of Mormon is the tool of conversion because the doctrine of Christ is spelled out very clearly and repetitively throughout the Book of Mormon, . where in the Bible you have to really work to find it ~ it is not prevalent in the way that it is presented… and so for me it has been a really great opportunity.
As we launched this Book of Mormon challenge, we talked about the two goals that we have here in the mission:
teach repentance
baptize converts
We know that the only way to do that is for them to develop a testimony of the Book of Mormon. As we immerse ourselves in that… as we develop our faith in that ‘book of the restoration’ it it will transfer itself into the hearts and minds of those that we are teaching as we make it central to our teaching ~ that will bring the ‘spirit’ and enable them to truly understand the restored gospel and its importance. Joseph Smith declared after all that is has been said the greatest and most important duty is to ‘preach the Gospel’. President Nelson in our day has reaffirmed that. He has told you that ‘you were brought here at this time in this place for this purpose and this is the greatest message that is being taught on the face of the earth’.
And I would argue that it is the ‘only one that matters’.
We get to take virtually nothing physically out of this life ~ literally nothing physical out of this life. The only thing we get to take is our:
conversion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
our obedience
our knowledge
the relationships that we have developed and know in this life.
Taking forward this message ‘IS’ the most important thing that we can focus on to help people.

SN: In 1986 President Nelson traveled to Ghana in Africa to give a lecture at a university. He met with many dignitaries and among them was an African Tribal King. They visited a little bit before his talk… through a linguist (the African Tribal King had an interpreter).
After the lecture this King made his way directly to President Nelson and without his interpreter he asked President Nelson in perfect English, ‘Who are you?’ And President Nelson replied, ‘I am an ordained Apostle of Jesus Christ’. At that point the King said ‘What can you teach me about Jesus Christ?. President Nelson said, ‘May I ask you what you already know about him?’ President Nelson explained that after Savior’s crucifixion and resurrection he came to the people of ancient America where he taught his Gospel. He organized his church and asked his disciples to keep a record of his Ministry among them then he explained that that record is what is known as the Book of Mormon. Then he gave the King a copy of the Book of Mormon.
Then they opened together to 3 Nephi 11, and read about Christ’s ministry to the Nephites in the Americas. At this point the King said to President Nelson, ‘You could have given me diamonds or rubies… but nothing is more precious to me than this knowledge about Jesus Christ’. (VIDEO)

The book of Mormon is clearly the most precious thing that we have. It is the only thing that will lead us back to our Heavenly Father… and how we apply ourselves to it and use it is really the critical question.

PN: Elder Ballard shared a story from his mission when he was a Mission President. He said they had a missionary that had been out in the field for a while and had come to him and said that he had started to come into contact with some anti-Mormon literature and that he had a lot of questions that nobody seemed to want to answer. He wanted to know if Elder Ballard would answer those questions…
Elder Ballard replied, ‘OK you've given me an assignment… I think it's only fair that I give you an assignment. Have you been reading the Book of Mormon every day?’ And the Elder bowed his head and said ‘No, I haven't read it for quite a while.’ President Ballard said, ‘OK, your assignment is to go back and read the Book of Mormon until I can do the research on the questions that you have. I will get back to you with the answers.’
The young Elder said, ‘Fair enough.’ They parted separate ways and came back two weeks later. President Ballard pulled out all his notes from the questions the Elder had and the Elder sat down in front of him and as President Ballard started to open up this discussion the young missionary said President Ballard it won't be necessary read to read or to answer those questions after reading the book of Mormon again I understand that it is the word of God and those questions don't matter.’ and Elder Ballard replied I've gone to a lot of work and because questions but the real point was that he didn't need to have those answers answered because he was rooted in the Book of Mormon. He was reading each and every day and he had received the answers that were necessary for his salvation. When we do that ~ that gives us the opportunity to continue that doctrine of Christ as we continue to grow, to become stronger. Being in the Book of Mormon is critical for our own development and for those who we are teaching. (VIDEO)

SN: I like the example of the Israelites… when I think about the Israelites and how they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and each day they would go out and gather manna from heaven. The Lord would provide manna for them to eat. That was their sustenance. That was their nourishment. They got the idea that maybe they could just gather the manna each morning. So they tried that… gathering enough that would last for a few days, so they wouldn't have to go out every morning and do that. As they tried that… the manna spoiled. So then they tried to preserve it and it still spoiled. The lesson I like to think about there… The analogy ~ is how our Heavenly Father has given ‘us’ the Book of Mormon for our day! This precious nourishment is our spiritual sustenance every day ~ just like the manna ~ we can't read 10 chapters on Monday and think that ‘I can go the rest of the week without reading’.
It is ‘spiritual nourishment’ that we need every day. I have a testimony about how important it is that we read the Book of Mormon every day… every day… every day!

PN: Absolutely! It is the tool of ‘conversion’ like we talked about… for us and for the people we are teaching. It will change our lives ~ if we allow it. It will change the lives of others that are around us. (VIDEO)
Everything we need for salvation is in the Book of Mormon. Will we stay a part of the Book of Mormon and will we read it every day? Will we treasure it up? Not just casually… but feast upon the word of Christ? In the doctrine of Christ as described in 2 Nephi 31:21… for me, sums it all up about the importance of the doctrine of Christ. After Nephi walks through all the principles associated with the doctrine of Christ… faith ~ repentance ~ baptism ~ receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost ~ and enduring to the end… Nephi says: ‘And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.’
It is the doctrine of Christ! That enables everyone that has lived on this earth to return home. It is the process by which we go through to become converted disciples of Jesus Christ as we apply the doctrine of Christ. The doctrine of Christ is our missionary purpose. They are one and the same. We need to focus on that purpose… knowing that this is the way that we will come to meet God in the flesh. To see Him as he is. To inherit all of His kingdom and receive eternal life. That is what makes this the greatest message of all time. That is what people are looking for…what they are striving for and the only way by which they can achieve it… it is through the doctrine of Christ that not only then do we become converted disciples but our faith expands and enables us to do miracles in His name.
We pray that as we have concluded now this Book of Mormon challenge… that we will feel that love for the Book of Mormon and the desire to stay in the book of Mormon every day for the rest of your life. That you will look at the doctrine of Christ as the pathway ‘for you’ to obtain happiness and joy in this life and eternal life in the world to come. It comes through no other way. No other name. Only through the Savior. Only through His atonement. His plan of salvation… are we able to achieve all that we desire in our lives. To be united as families for eternity. To have eternal increase. It is all summed up ~ that in the doctrine of Christ… and that is under-written by love. His love for us. And our love for Him and our love for our fellow man. That is the Gospel. I promise you that if we will let this sink deep into our hearts… we will have that faith to do those miracles. The faith to baptize. The faith to change peoples lives… And in so doing we will become those converted disciples of Christ. We will become be an instrument in His hands. We will find joy and happiness throughout our lives. It is my testimony that the doctrine of Christ is true. That the gospel of Jesus Christ is true. That it is the only way to return home. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

SN: I want to add my testimony to the President’s. We hope that as you’ve read the Book of Mormon daily that you have felt the power of the doctrine of Christ sink into your hearts… that it’s given you greater love for those you teach. A greater love for your companions. It's our hope that you will continue on and read the book of Mormon daily. I have a testimony of how that gives us power in our lives to overcome any challenge that we have. I'm so grateful that we are recipients of all that the Savior has provided for us through the Book of Mormon. If you have not finished the Book of Mormon in this challenge… keep at it! When you're able to… keep at it! Look at it with a new focus this time and think about a question you might have or something else you'd like to focus on… and just keep it going!
We love you. We are grateful for these experiences that we get to share together. To feel our Savior’s love for us. To be able to share that love with those around us. I say this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Elder & Sister Allred

Addicted to the Doctrine of Christ

Elder and Sister Allred taught us about ‘Holy Habits and Righteous Routines’…
Teaching us the positive side of ‘addiction!
Sister Allred referenced a talk given in 2011, to the youth of Mexico, by Elder Dallin H. Oaks. Elder Oaks spoke to them about forming ‘holy habits and righteous routines… and these may be different for every person’.

The Allreds shared with us several holy habits (or righteous routines) that they have made a part of their lives that have blessed their lives… that can bless ‘our’ lives if we make them habits or routines.

They asked us all to grab a pen and paper and to write down the habits and routines that we may need to establish in our own lives. They asked us to use the ‘spirit’ to help us choose what we individually may want to make a habit/routine.

They gave examples of:
personal prayer, magnify callings, prayer (morning and night), family or companionship prayers (morning and evening), early to bed ~ early to rise, blessing on the food, do the Lord’s will, read the Book of Mormon daily, maintain an appropriate sense of humor, attend all meetings on Sunday, exercise, keep the Sabbath Day holy, follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, Stake Conference attendance, control of thoughts, feelings and attitudes, attend Stake Meetings, be enthusiastic, attendance at Young Adult Firesides and activities… (that’s where they met ;>), be proactive rather than reactive, follow the living Prophets, Seers and Revelators (all 15 of of them), view only edifying media and images, listen to General Conference, work, live on a monthly budget and save for a rainy day (practice with your MSF cards), keep commitments, listen to good music in you home, follow through promptly and thoroughly, read good books, live righteous principles and follow the Lord’s commandments, get a college education or go to a trade school, be a little early to appointments, pay tithes and a generous fast offering, fast monthly, speak positively about church leaders…

As we put these ‘Holy Habits and Righteous Routines’ to work in our individual lives they can protect from worldly addictions and sin.

‘Holy Habits and Righteous Routines’ will bring fulfillment, direction, and happiness to our lives if we are able to create a plan and make daily habits.

Building Spiritual Momentum ~ Elder Harmon and Elder Zook

Elder Harmon and Elder Zook decided to give their devotional on President Nelson’s recent General Conference talk titled ‘The Power of Spiritual Momentum’.
They began with the Prophet talking about a basketball game that he had recently watched:
‘In that game, the first half was a seesaw battle, back and forth. Then, during the last five seconds of the first half, a guard on one team made a beautiful three-point shot. With only one second left, his teammate stole the inbound pass and made another basket at the buzzer! So that team went into the locker room four points ahead with a palpable surge of momentum. They were able to carry that momentum into the second half and win the game.’
They spoke of having a plan of action… like in the basketball game ~ we need to use every ‘tool’ we can!
We need to build ‘MOMENTUM’ especially ‘SPIRITUAL’ momentum while we are serving as missionaries. We build with the spiritual momentum. They gave us another aspect from President Nelson’s talk… the importance of ‘POSITIVE and SPIRITUAL Momentum’:
‘We have never needed positive spiritual momentum more than we do now, to counteract the speed with which evil and the darker signs of the times are intensifying. Positive spiritual momentum will keep us moving forward amid the fear and uncertainty created by pandemics, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and armed hostilities. Spiritual momentum can help us withstand the relentless, wicked attacks of the adversary and thwart his efforts to erode our personal spiritual foundation.’
Then Elder Zook and Elder Harmon walked us through the ‘5’ specific plans of action in President Nelson’s talk:
1: Get on the covenant path and stay there.
2: Discover the joy of daily repentance.
3: Learn about God and how He works.
4: Seek and expect miracles.
5: End conflict in your personal life.
They ended with this powerful promise from our Prophet:
‘As you act on these pursuits, I promise you the ability to move forward on the covenant path with increased momentum, despite whatever obstacles you face. And I promise you greater strength to resist temptation, more peace of mind, freedom from fear, and greater unity in your families.
God lives! Jesus is the Christ! He lives! He loves us and will help us. Of this I testify in the sacred name of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, amen.’

Devotional ~ Elder Clark and Elder Hersam
Consecration vs. Sacrifice (Find the Lift)
In Elder in Elder Uchdorf's most recent talk in April’s General Conference he spoke about how airplanes need to move forward in order to overcome ‘gravity and drag’.
As missionaries we also need to overcome the ‘gravity and drag’ by consecrating our service to the Lord. By consecrating our efforts we can overcome adversity and create that ‘forward thrust’ that is needed to serve with our whole hearts.
In 2 Nephi 31:18,19 it tells us how we can create the ‘lift’ that is needed.
19 And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.
20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.
We are not sacrificing when we serve the Lord. We might be giving up activities or material things in order to serve… which could be a sacrifice…
Consecrating our service to the Lord is freely serving with a purpose. To love and bring others the happiness the Gospel brings. When you consecrate your service no effort is wasted.

We will probably never be asked to give up (sacrifice) our lives for the Savior ~ but we can consecrate our lives to Him through our efforts.
~ To consecrate is to purify our lives.

April 1 Devotional
Devotional: Elder West and Elder Peterson
The Blessings of Leaving Our Nets Behind

Elder West and Elder Peterson gave a wonderful devotional from the Scriptures Matthew 4: 18-20 where Christ calls to His disciples…

“18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

What helped therm to come up with what they wanted to do for their Devotional was, they were street contacting a couple of days ago and they were talking to people outside of the Methodist Church. A lady there who had seen them walking approached and said, ‘I’ve been watching you the whole time you’ve been here… and I feel like you’re an answer to my prayer’.
She felt they were meant to be there because she has some youth in her congregation and she is planning a missionary trip for them. They would be going somewhere for a week and she wanted to do the theme: “Leaving Their Nets Behind”… and with that she won’t tell them where they’re going and the youth are pretty upset about that. They can’t seem to let go of their nets ~ to let go and have that faith to just follow and not know where they are going.’
So she asked them, “How do you leave your nets behind? You guys are out here for two years…”
And that begs the question “How do we all leave our nets behind?”
Nets can represent the things we like to do… Us having control over our lives…. That’s really what gave them the idea for this devotional.
Elder West and Elder Peterson:
‘We have been pondering quite a bit about what inspired us to leave our nets behind... there are definitely many things you have to leave behind when you come on a mission.
Ultimately it is just a ‘leap of faith’. You have to have faith… to trust that what the Lord asks you to do is the right thing. Because he has asked us to drop our nets and come and serve. To obey rules that the rest of The world doesn’t have to obey. And always right next to faith is hope because we have the hope That as were faithful to the Lord we’re going to see more blessings by following the Savior rather than just doing the things that we want. So if there are all these blessings involved and so much happiness then why is it so hard sometimes? there is a common misconception about how conforming to God’s will somehow restricts us and makes us unhappy. That’s just not true because when we’re obedient to the standards and commandments and following God’s will in any way it truly makes us free a great example of that is in the Book of Mormon. At the end of Alma is the wonderful example of Captain Moroni.
I remember in my training Elder Tanner would always talk about Captain Moroni. I started reading about him more intently and what stood out about him was when he would talk about The Standard of Liberty ~ that just opened it up that much more for me about the standards that we have FREE US!
I read this talk in preparation of doing this devotional called Becoming a Consecrated Missionary. In that talk it spoke of the missionaries that actually consecrated their work were more free. They are the ones that feel the Spirit the most. That have the most success. The safest... they are not in danger. As missionaries we really do have a sacred calling. It is the most important ‘work’ going on in the world. To completely give our will over to the Lord. Our all to God ~ to drop all those nets and to follow Him. I know that as soon as I did I started to become so much happier on my mission. And I started seeing blessings and relationships with people become closer… and that was all because we were prospering by following God‘s Commandments.
As we continue to be obedient to the standards to drop whatever bad habits we might be tempted to pick up on the mission… if we drop those things and continue to be obedient to the standards and try and be more like Christ ~ to follow Him ~ we will start seeing those blessings more often.’

March 18, 2022
Thank you Sisters Keeley & Shulz for a great devotional.
Good morning GAM. We love the Book of Mormon challenge both individually and studying as a companionship. It is super special. We have noticed the Spirit seems to speak to us through the verses. The Spirit is so important to have with us in our missionary work and the Book of Mormon is a powerful tool in that work.

The words of Mormon in 1:7 tell us, "And I do this for a wise purpose; for thus it whispereth to me, according to the workings of the Spirit of the Lord which is in me. And now, I do not know all things; but the Lord knoweth all things which are to come; wherefore, he worketh in me to do according to his will." It is a testimony to me that having the Spirit of God with us every day to guide us in his work is so important. He is leading us, if we listen to his promptings.

In III Nephi 11:3 we learn the spirit speaks to us, not in a harsh voice, but "it being a small voice and did pierce them that did hear to the center...it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn." This is a great testimony that we can't go wrong if we listen and hear the still small voice. We need to recognize the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

In this world today there are many voices and things happening so fast we need to listen to promptings of the Holy Ghost to guide us. In I Nephi 4:7 we read "and I was led by the Spirit to know the things which I should do."

We would like to share a story. When I was training we were trying to find a gray dot. We went to see a lady and as she answered the door, it was apparent she was not happy to see us. She shut the door as she was saying "have a good life." A few weeks later her name kept popping into my head (sometimes the Lord does that). So we had the prompting to go see her. We had made fudge that day and decided to take her a treat. As she answered the door, we handed her the treat and said, "if you ever need anything, we are here to help. As missionaries we are here to serve." The lady said, "This is enough, just to know you are thinking of me. I am all alone." We gave her a Book of Mormon and she committed to read it.

The invitation we would like to leave with you is to pray to God and seek to listen to his promptings and be led by the Spirit as to the things you should do.
