Today's photo shows one of our members standing by the tomb of St. John the Evangelist in Ephesus. It was rebuilt in the 6th century by Justinian.

Extra-Biblical tradition holds that John fled to Ephesus around AD 50 with Mary to escape persecution.

With this post we continue our journey through historic present-day Turkey. Our members have shared with us a photograph of the ruins of the ancient Roman library in Ephesus, at one time the third largest library in the ancient world.

It is estimated to have held 12,000 scrolls. It was destroyed by a fire in 262 AD.

Please find below our member's photo of the Library of Celsus. We have also added two maps, one taken from the Smithsonian Tour Guide and the other from the internet standby, wikipedia.

Another photo from our members traveling along the Turkish seacoast.

The Arkadian way was, and is, a beautiful road leading from the harbor to the Ephesus amphitheater. Some say it was the most beautiful boulevard of the ancient world. The pavement still shows cruciform graffiti cut by some early Christians,

Some of our members are visiting Ephesus, an ancient Christian city in modern-day Turkey. We will be posting some of their photographs from this wonderful site.

The picture in this post shows the theater at Ephesus, which could seat 24,000 people. The theater was the scene of a near riot, caused by the visit of the Apostle Paul to Ephesus.

A silversmith name Demetrius made a fortune selling statuettes of the goddess. He was upset because he said Paul taught that, "gods made with hands are not gods."

In response to Paul, the locals chanted, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians."

Today is the 508th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. It began when the Augustinian Monk Martin Luder famously nailed his 95 Theses to the door in Wittenberg.

Luder, who later changed his name to Luther, changed the course of Western history with his questioning of church teaching.

Luther is a very important person in world history. You may be familiar with various lists of the most important people in the last 1,000 years, and on some of these lists, Luther comes in second. Not just among Christians, but in the world at large, Luther is a VIP.

Where might one go to learn more about Luther and his ideas?

The Cross Alone site, managed by our pastor, offers a sermon on the reformation: https://crossalone.us/?p=11004

The Evangelical Christian Post offers some history: https://www.christianpost.com/news/reformation-day-7-notable-enemies-of-martin-luther.html

Roland Bainton's "Here I Stand," is still a relevant and insightful biography of Luther. For people with a serious interest in history, they might follow Bainton with Oberman's superb, "Martin Luther: Man Between God and the Devil."
