The Good Shepherd

John 10:1 “I, Jesus, am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

For me this verse brings some very vivid pictures to mind. I was raised with sheep, goats, cows and other fussy critters. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I have sacrificed my money, time, sleep, and poured out my heart in prayer for these insignificant animals. My heart aches when they are sick or hurt. I spend sleepless nights to make sure they are going to be OK during labor. They need my money and knowledge to help them each and every day. But I must admit that I am not willing to lay down my life for them. I acknowledge they do consume a lot of my time, but to lay down my life!!! No most likely not.

Have you ever thought why we are referred to as sheep in the Bible? Stinky, stupid animals that follow each other around, even to the point of their own destruction. That is a sheep for sure- constantly finding something to try that most likely will kill them. Ever wonder why we have really good fences to keep animals in an area where they will not kill themselves. Maybe our fence is the Bible!!! If we read it and apply what God has shared with us, then we normally are not trying to get to the other side of the fence and potentially kill ourselves.

Jesus said ,“He is the way, the Truth and the Life. And NO ONE comes to the Father (God) except through me (Jesus).” John 14:6

Jesus knew it would take laying down His life for us. He hinted at it many times while on this earth, and those with him could not comprehend what He was saying. Not until He died. “I, Jesus, am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” And He did.

Take the time this week to read the biblical account of the end of Christ’s life. Read how He laid down His life for you and me, so that we could be held in His arms- protected-safe-warm-and loved, at every minute of our earthly life.

Hint this is not the end of the story; we will get to that another time.

Once again we get the privilege of celebrating the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. While I live I will celebrate my Lord, and when I die I will rest in His loving arms with no more pain, sorrow or scars. Thank you Jesus for the Gift of Life.

I just wanted to re-share my thoughts with you again. Hard to believe it has been almost 2 years. I know this last year has brought many changes to our life. But a best friend is still a good thing to have. This is a picture my daughter-in-law took of my granddaughter and her best friend. Oh how precious is every child.
Fight for your children, as everyone of them is miracle. Hold them tight, teach them about God and protect them from the evil of this world. This is my prayer for each parent as you raise up the next generation.

Our Children

As I watch things unfold during this epidemic, I think about our children. Are our children founded in the Word of God? Do they know the foundations Our Father has set for us, understanding it to the point of salvation?

Parents as a teacher of children I have been disturbed for years at how our Christian homes do not think it important to teach our children about God’s Word. What are you doing at home each day to instill the foundations our Lord has given us? We cannot rely upon Sunday School or programs like Awana's to give our children a Biblical foundation. These things are a starting point, but the lasting faith a child grasps comes from their home.

As life slows down, just even for a few days of quarantine, I plead with you to start some new routines with the children. Memorize verses each week, read stories from the Bible each night and answer questions that children might have. Encourage your children to listen to media that expand their knowledge of God (there are many programs available, even on YouTube. Adventure in Odyssey was one of my kid’s favorites. There is a new series called Adventum Bible Stories also.) Most of these are audio series, which are great at making our kids minds work. They remember so much more when there is no visual entertainment. Encourage their minds to think, grow, wonder about God, and to ask questions. I also encourage parents to always listen to them first to make sure they are appropriate for the age and understanding of your children. It will also allow you to answer the questions you children will ask.

Take care with our children’s minds, as they are sponges and need to be directed and filled with knowledge of our Lord. My prayer for each of you is that God will give you wisdom in training up the children God has placed in your life. Oh Lord may our children have a deep knowledge and hunger for you. Help me understand how to guide them in the knowledge and hunger with each step they take. May they be grounded in God’s Word and knowledge, with an understanding of the Hope and Peace only you, Lord, can bring.

Be careful little eyes and ears what you see and hear. Guide them mom and dad, for this is pleasing to God when His little children call Him Lord.
