(1/30/26) NEWS RELEASE: SCEMD Moves to OPCON 2 Ahead of Winter Weather

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) has moved to OPCON 2 ahead of the forecasted winter weather, reflecting a higher level of readiness among emergency response teams statewide.

SCEMD officials are working closely with the South Carolina Emergency Response Team, local agencies, and the National Weather Service to monitor conditions and provide guidance to residents.

“South Carolina’s Emergency Response Team is prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to any impacts from this winter weather event,” said Kim Stenson, Director of SCEMD. “We encourage residents to stay informed, take precautions, and plan ahead for their safety.”

Additional Information for Residents:
Travel: Roads may become icy or snow-covered, and strong winds can create snow drifts and reduced visibility. Only travel if necessary.
Heating Safety: Use space heaters safely. Keep combustible objects at least three feet away and never leave heaters unattended.
Emergency Supplies: Keep at least three days of food, water, and medications for your household.

Winter Safety Tips:
•Driving Safety: Expect strong winds and reduced visibility. Drive slowly, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel.
•Dress in Layers: Stay warm and protect against frostbite and hypothermia.
•Cover Extremities: Wear hats, gloves, scarves, and warm socks.
•Limit Time Outdoors: Avoid prolonged exposure during extreme cold or high winds.
•Slip, Trip, and Fall Prevention: Wear boots with good traction, use handrails, and clear ice or snow from walkways.
•Shoveling Snow: Take frequent breaks, lift with your legs (not your back), and avoid overexertion.
•Road Conditions: Check the SCDOT 511 app for up-to-date road closures and traffic information.
•Shelters: If shelters are open, locations and details are available at https://www.scemd.org/stay-informed/emergency-shelters/.

SCEMD urges all residents to monitor official weather alerts and trusted local news sources as conditions change.

For more information, visit https://www.scemd.org/.

Extremely cold temperatures after the recent winter storm mean that conditions are still dangerous in many affected areas. Remember: older adults and people with health conditions may be at greater risk for cold-related illnesses and may have more difficulty with snow and ice removal. Check on family, friends, and neighbors near you—some people may still have storm-related needs that can be addressed with your help, or with the help of your local emergency management office or volunteer agencies.
