Exodus 20:15 - Do not steal.

Jerry Bridges has observed that there are three basic attitudes we can take toward possessions.

The first says, “What’s yours is mine; I’ll take it.” This is the attitude of the thief.

The second says, “What’s mine is mine; I’ll keep it.” Since we are selfish by nature, this is the attitude that most people have most of the time.

The third attitude—the godly attitude—says, “What’s mine is God’s; I’ll share it.”

(Philip Graham Ryken and R. Kent Hughes, Exodus: Saved for God’s Glory (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Books, 2005), 647.)

Exodus 20:15 - Do not steal.

When a person steals, they are therefore saying that God is not as generous as they wish Him to be.

With this example (2 Samuel 11-12) as background we have some indication of a draft definition of stealing. It is an act that springs from dissatisfaction with what God has given us and that results in the taking of an object, possession or right that is important to someone else in order to satisfy our own desires. Because it springs from self-centredness it is therefore not only against a neighbour but also against God.

(Andrew Reid, Exodus: Saved for Service, ed. Paul Barnett and Belinda Pollard, Reading the Bible Today Series (Sydney, South NSW: Aquila Press, 2013), 233.)

““Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭20‬:‭8‬-‭11‬

Not a SUGGESTION.

The purpose of the Ten Commandments is to tell us God’s “pattern of conduct.”

They reveal to the Israelites a bit of who God is, knowledge that must translate into appropriate behavior on their part.

In other words, as glimpses into the nature of God and his relationship with his people, the Ten Commandments are not exhaustive pieces of legislation that account for each and every contingency and possibility.

They are to be obeyed, but as to how, that is a matter of continual reflection by the Israelites as they continue to live and grow in the shadow of God’s love and protection.

Examples of specific applications of these commandments are found in chapters Exodus 21–23.

(Peter Enns, Exodus, The NIV Application Commentary (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2000), 421.)
