The Father’s Extravagant Love I
Pastor Cesar Buitrago
The Gathering Covenant Church

Luke 15:11-32
One of the most beautiful and profound parables that Jesus taught is the parable of the prodigal son. I call it the parable of The Father’s Extravagant Love because the emphasis is on the Father’s proactive love towards both of his sons.
A parable is an “earthly story with a heavenly meaning.”
We will divide the parable into four Acts.
Act 1: The Offensive Demand.
The younger brother said: “Father, give me my share of the estate. So he divided his property between them.” What an insulting demand. Usually, the inheritance is given once the parent is deceased. The son was saying: “Dad, I wished you were dead.” The younger son demonstrated no shame on his offensive demand.
He wanted “his freedom”, his independence. He wanted his Father’s stuff without his Father’s presence. We are very similar. We want God’s blessings, health, money, relationships, peace but we do not necessarily want a relationship with God. I read an article where the prayer life of this generation is like an Amazon Cart: “Ship it quickly, and I’ll see you later.”
Act 2: The Destructive Life:
He got his money and his freedom. He went as far from home as he could, and he squandered everything in wild living. Living independently from God is destructive. We were created by Him and for Him. Our lives find no meaning without God in the picture.
After he had spent all, there was a famine in that region and he was in need. The self-sufficient young man was now in desperate need. The pleasures of the world are short-lived. Where were the friends? The partygoers? So desperate was his need that he got a job feeding pigs, those unclean animals that Jews could not even touch. But his desperation got even worse. He wanted to fill his stomach with the pods the pigs were eating, “but no one gave him anything.” Complete loneliness. When we walk away from God our lives become destructive and unmanageable.
Sometimes we need to hit rock bottom to realize our need to repent and turn to God.
Lester Myers was a successful businessman until alcohol abuse destroyed it completely. Not only did he lose his income, but he lost his marriage as well. One day he found himself drunk in the streets of Fresno. In his own words: he was “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” The policeman asked him: “I can take you to jail or I can take you to a place where they can help you.” Please take me to a place where they can help me -he answered.
He ended up in the Fresno Rescue Mission where he heard the gospel for the first time. He heard the message that there was a loving God who could change his life if he turned to Him.
Lester had an encounter with Jesus Christ which gave him the power to overcome his addictions and start a completely new life. This is what happens when we turn to God with faith.
The prodigal son said to himself: In my father’s house even the servants eat much better than this! I will set out and go back to my father and tell him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me like one of your servants.”
Act 3: The Extravagant Love:
While he was still a long way off, the father saw him and was filled with compassion for him. The father ran towards him, threw his arms around his dirty, pig-smelling son and kissed him. And the father gave three commands:
1) Quick: The best robe: Sonship restored
2) A ring: The family signet ring: Authority restored
3) Sandals: Slaves went barefoot: Dignity restored
There are cultural tones that make these events even more powerful. Fathers did not run. It was not dignified. They walked slowly and with authority. God’s love runs towards us, even if it looks ridiculous! There is a more powerful cultural insight. When a son shamed his father and his family the way this young man had done, the whole community would ostracize him and forbid him to return to the village. This explains why the father ran towards him while he was still a way off. The father was not only forgiving Him but He was protecting him from the rejection from the community and declaring to the whole village: This is my son!
My friend, God’s love for you and me is truly extravagant! He goes to great lengths to forgive us, to restore us and to transform us.
No matter how far you have gone from God, his grace runs towards you while you are still far from home. To forgive you and to protect you from the accusers.
Let Jesus embrace you and bring you back home! Let him restore you and give you a new life!
Act 4: The Resentful Son is lost too… (To be continued)

The faith God honors
Pastor Cesar Buitrago
The Gathering

There is a beautiful dramatic story in the gospels of a paraplegic carried by four friends. It is a story of a persistent faith and Jesus’ power to provide forgiveness of sins and healing. The story goes like this:
“When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”
But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins! Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
Mark 2:1-12 (NLT)
What a powerful lesson of persistent faith:
The man was paralyzed. He could not move around. He was completely dependent on others. He lived a life of isolation and poverty. Being paralyzed is a picture of our brokenness without Jesus. I remember the story of Tom. He was guilty in a drunk driving car accident. He was bitter, angry at himself, angry at God. A friend invited him to church. Reluctantly, he accepted the invitation. The message that Sunday spoke to his heart and with tears in his eyes he committed his life to Christ. Everything changed for him. He was set free from his depression and bitterness. He had experienced the power of forgiveness and the love of God.
The four men of our story found a big obstacle, the crowd of people made access to the house impossible. But they did not give up, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. And Jesus saw their faith. What kind of faith does Jesus see in you?
Do you easily give up when you find obstacles in your walk of faith? Or like these four men, you persist, you are bold as you seek God. Jesus saw the faith of these men, they were active, united and persistent.
Jesus forgave the man’s sins. Wait a minute. Everyone was waiting for a miracle not forgiveness of sins. Friend, our greatest need is not a strong body but a clean soul. Jesus is healing this man from the inside out.
Are you living with regrets from your past? Have you forgiven yourself? Have you received the forgiveness of your sins? Jesus is available to heal your soul and your body. He has authority to forgive sins because He is God incarnate.
Finally, Jesus healed the man and he was able to walk! Everyone was amazed.
Come to Jesus today! Look for a church family! Be a good friend and bring someone who is in desperate need to Jesus. He is mighty and can forgive your sins and heal your weak body. Come to Him, He is waiting for you!
