On Thursday, May 15th ASAP (After School Assistance Program) concluded for the 2025-2026 school year. Since 2003 the St. Luke CDC has operated ASAP in partnership with the Paterson Department of Recreation. This program allows us to provide a safe place for children to learn, be helped and nurtured. Through this program, we are also able to employ a team of capable persons who provide the structure of the program. The following reflections are from four of the ASAP staff members:

My experience working at the afterschool program for the first time was honestly really fun. I would definitely do it again because I truly enjoyed working with the kids. They always make me laugh, and getting to know each of their personalities has been one of the best parts. I like helping them with homework, doing activities with them, and just being someone they can talk to and have fun with. Making memories with them, taking pictures, dancing, laughing, and seeing them happy makes the job enjoyable. I’ve been working at St. Luke for a couple of years and I honestly love everything about it. The kids, my coworkers, and the bond we all have together make it feel like more than just a job. I appreciate being part of such a positive environment, and I’m grateful for the experience and opportunities I’ve had here.

Working with the after school program this school year has been very interesting yet fun. The kids were very energetic and I learned so much about them. It was an absolute pleasure to help the kids with their work and it was an experience getting to know each and every one of them. I’m looking forward to doing it again.

Working with ASAP really helped me figure out the future I want to have. Being around kids every day and seeing their personalities, energy, and how much they look up to me, has shown me that this is something I am passionate about. I grew so much patience working with the children throughout the school year. At first it was challenging, but I learned how to stay calm, listen better, and handle different situations with understanding. I’m thankful for ASAP because it’s not just a job to me, it’s a place where I learned, grew, and built real connections. I always look forward to working at ASAP because it helps me continue growing as a person and teaches me new things every day.

My experience with ASAP was very meaningful to me. During my time there, I became really close with the kids and truly enjoyed working with them every day. I always looked forward to coming in and spending time with them because they brought so much joy and energy. Working with the students also taught me a lot about myself, especially how to be more patient, understanding, and supportive. Every child is different, and learning how to help each one in their own way helped me grow as a person. Overall, this experience had a very positive impact on me, and I will always appreciate the memories and relationships I made through the program.
