Church History

The 10 acre property on North Ocean Avenue in Patchogue, was purchased in 1965 as a dream of Father Raphael Monteleone's to build a larger Church. The original church was on Main Street in 1919 to accomodate the ever increasing Italian population that St. The name was R.C. Church of S.S. Perpetua & Felicity for four years and changed to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1925. Montelone

realized that the demographics and needs of the town were changing and he changed the parish from an Italian National Parish to a Diocecesan territorial parish. His dream was realized and the New Church was built and opened on May 12, 1968 for its schedule of masses. The church now could seat 1050 and was formally dedicated by Bishop Walter P. Kellenberg on June 9, 1968. Father Monteleone retired in 1975 and Father Alexander L. Sledzaus became Pastor in 1975 until his retirement in 1975. Father Slezaus was a visionary as the Priests before and envisioned a shrine to Our Lady which was completed in 1978 and a School building and a parish center with a Chapel for worship was realized and dedicated on October 28, 1984 by Bishop John R. McGann. On January 23 1994 the 25/75 anniversary mass was celebrated by Bishop John R. McGann and all Priests that have served at Mt. Carmel Church. The Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was completed on August 23, 1993 on the lawn in front of the Rectory. In March 2019 Bishop John Barres celebrated mass in the Church with the parishioners and returning clergy. This was followed by a light refreshment in the Parish center decorated by the religious Ed Families with pictures throughout the parish's history.

There are things that are never easy to say or do. This weekend I had to inform the parish community of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel that I am being transferred at the end of June.
There is a real sense of grief on my part and on the part of my parishioners, and even though I have had a little more time to digest it, there’s still some anger and frustration that I feel. This was the first parish where I was a pastor, and it holds a special place in my heart because of that.
There’s a reason why priests are called father, and even though it may not resonate with our current culture, it has been something I take very seriously. Like my own father, there are many things that I have had to sacrifice for my family. While some of my friends, who are priests, have enjoyed vacations and programs that have helped them, the needs of my parish had to come first. There have been many people in the parish, and friends from outside, who have been extremely generous in helping me do things to build up the parish community. I couldn’t have done what was done in the parish without them.
While there are still many things that need to be accomplished in the parish, I have faith in my friend Fr. Dave who is taking my place. Truthfully, I know him to be a better man and better priest than I am, and the people of this parish deserve better than what I can offer.
There are two months left before I take up my new assignment, and in that time there’s still a lot to do, including an Irish festival. So pray that God gives me the grace I need to be the pastor I need to be for the next few months, and years.
