José María Mariano Escriva Albás was a Roman Catholic priest from Spain who founded Opus Dei, an organization of laypeople and priests dedicated to the teaching that everyone is called to holiness and that ordinary life is a path to sanctity. He was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II, who declared Saint Josemaría should be "counted among the great witnesses of Christianity."

Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist!

John the Baptist is the only person besides Jesus and Mary whose birthday the Church celebrates with a liturgical feast, because John the Baptist was the last of the prophets, and because his entire mission was to prepare people for the coming of the Messiah and to point Him out when He came. Even before his birth, he rejoiced at the visit he and his mother Elizabeth received from Mary and Jesus, a foreshadowing of his prophetic call (Luke 1:41). May John the Baptist inspire us today and always to find joy in the presence of the Lord and to lead other people to Him! St. John the Baptist, pray for us!

Today, consider praying the Canticle of Zechariah, the first words that John the Baptist's father spoke after naming his son. It is prayed by priests, religious, and all who pray the Liturgy of the Hours during Morning Prayer, but you can pray it anytime! It is found in Luke 1:68-79.
