Providence Presbyterian Church (OPC) Our desire is to glorify God and enjoy Him in all aspects of our lives, both corporately and individu

The Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) is a conservative Christian denomination that has been defending biblical Christianity for over 75 years. In 1995 a few families gathered together for a Bible study. Those who began to meet were interested in starting a church that was committed to the historic Christian faith, the sovereign grace of God, beautiful worship, relevant preaching from God’s Word,

and strong relationships. Since the group was meeting under the oversight of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, it had the benefit of the prayers and wisdom of the people of that faithful denomination. The Lord heard and answered the prayers by adding families and individuals to the group and in 2003 it was organized as a local congregation with its own elders. Since then Providence has worked to pursue those same commitments and build upon a strong foundation. Our distinctives include Bible-based worship,
discipleship, active service, and loving fellowship. If you are looking for a church home that rejoices in God’s Word and seeks to apply it to every-day life, we invite you to visit with us. Sunday Meeting Schedule:

Sunday School/Discipleship Class - 9:45 am
Morning Worship - 11:00 am
Evening Service - 5:00 pm

The holiness of God's people stands out in an unholy world. It isn't because it’s flashy or gaudy. It isn't because it’s vicious or hateful. It is because it is as Christlike in humility as it is Christlike in its immovability from the truth.

Christians are different. We know we are different. We feel like we are different. Sometimes we feel the hostility towards us because we are different. Sometimes, we suffer.
The Apostle Peter writes to encourage the saints to remember who they are in Christ and to endure their suffering by maintaining a holy presence in their world.

Join us for a new sermon series beginning this Sunday, July 21.

There is an exchange between the father of the prodigal son and the older brother that is of tremendous value to the believer. It is something every child of the covenant should remember as they grow up knowing God.

The older brother comes in from the field and sees his younger brother being honored and celebrated upon his return from a life of wastefulness, foolishness, and perversion. He is angry and jealous and complains to his father that, for all his time serving with obedience, his father never gave him even a young goat to feast and celebrate with his friends. It seems like a perfectly reasonable complaint. He was just asking for a little appreciation. Just a goat, not a fattened calf like his wild brother got.

Listen to the wise and gentle way the father responds. "Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours." You see, this older son of the father already possessed everything. He had a relationship with his father and everything that was the father's belonged to him.

We wrongly get jealous of those who have an amazing conversion story and get all this attention (warranted attention!). The question we and our covenant children need to ask when we feel like we are not noticed by God is this: "Why demand a goat, when we have already been given the farm?"

The covenant blessings are given daily to us and if we do not take note of them, we are in danger of thinking our heavenly Father is unfair and cares little for us.

Take the wise and gentle counsel of your Father: you are His and He is yours.

Distance has a way of dulling some truly magnificent experiences, relationships, and joys. "Out of sight, out of mind" is a general observation of life at a distance.

But what about the distance measured in time? Time interrupts other experiences, relationships, and joys. This can impact our devotion to what was "once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3) when we first learned our faith. The cross was so long ago in history and our profession of faith when we were young seems long ago too. Perhaps as we age we become less "impressionable" under the teaching of God's word. After all, time has inserted other experiences, relationships, and joys to occupy our minds.

Has your devotion to the Lord become dulled over time or has it grown? Has your faith aged well? Does it grow with every new experience, relationship, and joy? "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever" (1 Peter 1:24-25). Time does not dull God's word to us. It has something to say to every new experience, relationship and joy.

Be encouraged, the Holy Spirit is at work keeping you "impressionable" under the word of God.

As I work in my office I hear a noise - a siren, an overhead airplane, or the dump truck unloading on the construction site next door. I see a car pass into the parking lot, turn, and then leave. I hear them through the walls; I see them through the windows. They are distractions. They invade my life. I get disturbed and wait for the noise to stop and the cars to leave so I can get back to what is important to me: my work. For many people that distraction, that invasion into their lives, is the Lord's Day worship.

Jesus said that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Clearly Jesus did not mean the Sabbath was a distraction or an invasion into life. He meant that the Lord set apart the day for man's good. The regular worship of the Lord on the first day of the week, since Christ's resurrection on that day, is not a distraction or an invasion of the Christian life, it is vital to it. It answers our need to worship the Lord with his people and to grow in grace. It is good for us. As we pass through our days counting our blessings or struggling through trials we find ourselves needing that time of worship to praise him, thank him, and even plead with him.

Treating the Lord's Day as a distraction or an invasion is to treat it as not being made for man at all.

Let's trust that the Sabbath was really made for us.
